Mission In the College of Education and Human Service Professions we utilize our diverse intellectual strengths to provide an education of enduring value for the professional, personal, and civic lives of our students. We engage with UMD and broader communities through our research, teaching, learning and commitment to the advancement of the human service professions.
Vision The College of Education and Human Service Professions promotes research and practice in the social and human sciences. Our collective teaching, scholarship, and service supports student development as engaged citizens, reflective learners, critical thinkers, and evidenceinformed practitioners in a culturally-sensitive, socially-just learning environment.

Community • Strengthen and develop community connections and engagement through collaborations, research, service, and participation. • ACTION STEPS: • Enhance community engagement activities in each department (either course or research based) • Identify new potential partnerships • Determine protocols for “relationship maintenance” • Develop protocols for recognitions of partnerships • Create opportunities to share information about partnerships including evaluation and “best practices” • Coordinate with Development Officer on community needs and support opportunities
Community • Support a positive and inclusive college climate by advancing equity, open communication, dynamic engagement and respect. • ACTION STEPS: • Determine college and department response to climate survey recommendations • Identify and implement strategies to enhance communication • Encourage and create opportunities for holistic development of a positive collegiate climate
Diversity/Intercultural Awareness • Advance and support opportunities to become culturally competent citizens with a focus on social justice. • ACTION STEPS: • Provide professional development opportunities for all staff and faculty members (minimum of one opportunity per year) • Increase partnerships with regional American Indian Nations • Increase faculty and staff training for search process
International/Global • Support the development of global citizens who understand the complexities of living in a globally interconnected world. • ACTION STEPS: • Create a college level international education committee to support and develop international work and provide guidelines about best practices • Grow relationships with existing partners • Increase outreach to colleagues (research, student exchange, etc.) in institutions and other agencies outside of the US • Create an incentive to internationalize the curriculum
Research • Advance excellence in research that builds upon our shared values as expressed through the CEHSP mission and vision. • ACTION STEPS: • Offer professional development on seeking grant funding both internal and external • Offer college-wide UROP workshop once a semester prior to the deadline • Create College committee to identify and develop external funding and SEED grant opportunities • Create the policies and procedures to support faculty-student research and conference presentations using new IDC funding and other travel support
Student Success • Prepare and equip students to be critically reflective learners and practitioners [through efficient and effective processes]; programs and curriculum optimize efficiency and effective practices. • ACTION STEPS: • All programs will review and revise curriculum to achieve increased efficiency and effectively support student success • Focus professional development around retention and other success initiatives (SEM) • Improve CEHSP retention and 4 year graduation rate • Make programs transfer friendly. Create at least one articulated agreement in each department • Provide additional pathways to degree
Sustainability • Model and prepare students to critically evaluate sustainable practices to enhance economic, environmental, physical, social and professional needs • ACTION STEPS:
. • Ensure that students in each program have access to professional development coursework introducing sustainability issues, relevant to global, regional and local concerns • Move towards paperless documentation within college and departmental units • Build models of resilience to support innovation and collegiate excellence
