HELPING EACH CHILD CREATE THE FUTURE District Make-Up The Governor Wentworth Regional School District was formed in 1964 and currently provides quality education for the communities of Brookfield, Effingham, New Durham, Ossipee, Tuftonboro and Wolfeboro. Providing elementary education are Carpenter, Crescent Lake, Effingham Elementary, New Durham, Ossipee Central and Tuftonboro Central Schools. Their total enrollment (at time of printing) is 1,156 students. Grade seven and eight educational needs are met at the Kingswood Regional Middle School in Wolfeboro, with an enrollment of 391 students. Students then move to the adjoining Kingswood Regional High School and the Lakes Region Technology Center with a combined current enrollment of 799 students. The LRTC also has 72 tuition students from area schools. We also welcomed Middleton students to the middle and high school this year. Total enrollment for the district is 2,418.
School Board The GWRSD School Board consists of elected representatives from each participating community with three elected members-at-large. Annually, Middleton will appoint one of its members to be a non-voting representative. Generally, meetings are held on the first Monday of every month (except in the summer) with time set aside for public input. Meeting dates are posted on our website.
Financial Information The average cost-per-pupil, K-12, for the academic year of 2014-2015 was $16,522.86 and will fluctuate accordingly. The equalized tax rate for 2014-2015 was $14.34/ $1000 (40% lower than the state average.)
Curriculum Governor Wentworth’s curriculum is aligned with state and national standards. The Commencement Goals, which appear on the back of this brochure, drive the curriculum, instruction and assessment for students in grades K-12.
The focus of education in the primary grades (K-3) is on language arts (reading, writing, speaking, listening and language) and mathematics. Students are introduced to social studies and science in kindergarten. The emphasis on these disciplines increases throughout the grades. Students in grades 4-6, as well as grades 7-8 at Kingswood Regional Middle School, engage in a rich curriculum across all content areas, built upon the foundational skills mastered in K-3. Kingswood Regional High School provides a comprehensive education for students in grades 9-12, including the opportunity to enroll in courses at the Lakes Region Technology Center. Students attending KRHS may also elect to participate in a variety of extracurricular activities. Students may also enroll in the Virtual Learning Academy Charter School. GWRSD continues to offer an alternative education program for students who are at risk of dropping out of school. Lakeside Academy has been a very successful option for some students. The current enrollment at Lakeside Academy is 29.
Accountability Assessment information is important to teachers, students, parents and the community. The District uses the Northwest Evaluation Association’s Measures of Academic Performance (MAP) for grades 1-10. Students take the computerized adaptive assessment and teachers receive immediate results. New Hampshire is part of the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium, which offers a new standardized assessment called “Smarter Balanced” that was first administered in the spring of 2015 in grades 3-8 and 11 in both reading and math. Beginning in spring 2016, all students in grade 11 will take the SAT instead of the Smarter Balanced assessment and reading assessment. Along with this, students in grades 4, 8, and 11 will continue to take part in the science NECAP.
Many juniors and most seniors elected to take the Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT) last year. The Governor Wentworth Regional School District is a member of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). The District Report Card is an annual reporting of statistical and objective data. Copies are available at the SAU Office. Statistical information can also be found at my.doe.nh.gov/profiles.
Facilities Our facilities are well maintained and the school board and district have been committed to long-range planning. Recently, the focus has been on energy efficiency and performance projects.
Students The primary concern in the Governor Wentworth Regional School District is the academic success of each child, so that he/she may become a capable and responsible adult, leaving the world a better place for the children to come. The real measure of success in any school system is the success of its students. While we are proud of the accomplishments of our students and graduates, the Governor Wentworth Regional Education Community is committed to continuous improvement.
