A simple sentence (or independent clause) is a sentence with only one subject and one predicate. Example: Tyler went to the mall on Saturday. A compound sentence consists of two or more simple sentences joined together by a comma and a coordinating conjunction (remember: FANBOYS). Example: Tyler went to the mall on Saturday, but Jody stayed home. A complex sentence consists of one simple sentence and one dependent clause (still has one subject and predicate, but starts with a subordinating conjunction – in bold below). Examples: Tyler went to the mall on Saturday whereas Jody stayed home. While Tyler went to the mall on Saturday, Jody stayed home. Punctuation Rules: 1. You must put a comma before the coordinating conjunction when linking the two simple sentences. 2. If you begin a sentence with a dependent clause, you must place a comma at the end of the dependent clause. 3. If you the dependent clause is in the middle of the sentence or at the end, you do not need a comma before or after the subordinating conjunction.
