Corruption at the leadership level as a progenitor of Nigeria’s current Economic state By Alade K. Emmanuel Department of Sociology University of Ilorin.

Corruption is a latent and inherent marker in man’s nature, and also in every society. No commune is void of this viral force, it’s just the level of ‘degree’ that distinguish Societies. Nevertheless man has a ‘moral compass’ by default aided by his super-ego (which comprises of values) and helps facilitate his decisional framework in knowing what’s right from wrong, and doing the right thing. It’s however unfortunate in Nigeria today that majority of the people don’t give into their “moral compass” hence the corruption, although poverty to a great extent fuels corruption among the masses, that however does not justify the act. Looking at Nigeria leadership continuum from before the 90s till date, greed, predatory inhuman instinct and the “let me grab my own” mentality has brought us to our current state of “uncontrolled dive into an economic meltdown”. Yes it did! The CBN Governor Mr Godwin Emefiele and managers of the nation’s economy made it known to the nation on 19 of September 2016 that “the worst is over” assuring the public by insisting that the “nations economic crisis” will soon come to an end.

Udoma, Adeosun and Emefiele are confident that measures like the removal of first class tickets for government officials (among other measures) will undoubtedly bring the country back on track. That’s a commendable effort don’t you think? Here comes the but……, but regardless of how promising and formidable a measure or policy might be, the greedy and “let me grab my own mentality” of strategic officers most importantly will squeeze life out of such measure(s) before its maturity. The corrupt nature of leaders even before the advent of the formal colonial masters facilitated colonialism and ultimately led to the impoverishment of Nigerians. Earlier on i mentioned that poverty to a great extent has activated the dormant corrupt marker among the proletariat, right? The question of concern now is why are Nigerian leaders who belong to the Bourgeoisies class still basking in corruption even with their superfluous salary package? The want of man is naturally insatiable, now imagine the quadric degree of want a very rich and ‘control lacky’ (not a mistake) individual will crave, that’s what is happening to most Nigerian leaders; the excessive salary package act as an accelerant to the already latent corrupt marker in them, thus they crave for more even if it means going beyond the norm of the society i.e.. Embezzlement of public funds, at the expense of others like pensioners.

Recommendations Nigerians all clamored for “change” and they got it, but it was a long shot from their desired change. Well here goes my proposed change on how to deal with this contabescent force of corruption. My recommendations’ is a way of giving Nigerians the change they really want; 1. There should be no ordinary reduction but a drastic reduction of the superfluous salary package of leaders in the house of representative, senates, house of assembly and at the presidential level. The excess that will be obtained from the “Operation kick-out superfluousness” in Nigeria within a year will undoubtedly develop the Nation from the grass root level (youth empowerment inclusive), if only the next “change embedded” recommendation is fully implemented. 2. “Operation kick-out superfluousness” in Nigeria obviously will not strive in a corruption weedy environment, if there’s going to be any result at all, it will trisoctahedronly maintain corruption, due to the available excess cash. Thus for the success of the first recommendation I propose a “firing pin legal system” that will effectively and efficiently tackle corruption by reducing it to the minimum minimorum; because corruption is a one in a million slate that can never be fully wiped clean! My recommendation is anchored on china scheduled and swift firing squad system, which is the only timely way out of Nigeria’s home-made-mess; corruption. 3|Hemmytian philosophy
