**COUNSELING DEPARTMENT GENERAL INFORMATION** Benicia High School offers a comprehensive counseling and guidance program that concentrates on the total growth of the student. Working on a one-on-one basis, in small groups or through classroom presentations, the BHS counselors offer support in the areas of program planning, college and career guidance, and school-to-work preparation. Benicia High School counselors are also available on a short-term basis for students with personal issues. For more information, contact the Benicia High School Counseling Office at 747-8334. ACADEMIC HONORS - Students are placed on the Honor Roll if they achieve a 3.0 or higher grade point average (GPA), Principal’s Honor Roll if GPA is 3.5 or higher and on the Principal’s Scholar Honor Roll if they achieve a 4.0 or higher weighted GPA. In order to be placed on either honor roll, students must be enrolled in at least 4 classes (20 credits) in which A through F letter grades are assigned. Students’ grade point averages are determined by using the following scale: Weighted: A=5; B=4; C=3; D=1; F=0 Non-Weighted: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0 Students enrolled in specific honors courses and any Advanced Placement (AP) course, as noted on the University of California course list, earn weighted grade points. ACADEMIC SUPPORT  PowerSchool: Parents and students can access current grades and attendance through the internet at www.psbusd.org. To log-on to the website, you will need a Web ID and password. You can request this information by calling the Counseling Office at 747-8334.  Valero Tutors: Adult professionals specializing in math and science tutoring are available one day a week in the library.  Math Lab: The Math lab is comprised of Math department teachers who provide tutorial assistance on a drop-in basis after school. Check with any math teacher or the counseling department for days and hours of operation.  English Lab: The English lab is comprised of English department teachers who provide tutorial assistance on a drop-in basis after school. Check with any English teacher or the counseling department for days and hours of operation. AVID – Advancement via Individual Determination, Grades 9-12 AVID is a 4 year program that helps prepare students with potential for success in rigorous secondary curriculum for fouryear college eligibility. It is an academic elective program based on writing as a tool of learning, inquiry method, and collaborative grouping. The three main components of the program are academic instruction, tutorial support, and motivational activities. CLASS CHANGES - Students are to stay in the classes they were assigned for the entire year. Schedule changes will only be made for specific reasons such as: error or missing class, level adjustments, balancing of classes due to teacher contract limits, or a graduation requirement is needed. Teacher change requests will not be granted. FALL REGISTRATION PROCESS Week Prior to Registration ~ Counselors enroll new students, balance classes within contract limits, and make schedule corrections. Registration Week ~ Students receive their self-selected schedule for the year. Schedule changes are made for the following reasons only: computer generated conflict or error, changes needed to fulfill graduation requirements or completion of a summer school course(s) that appears on the new schedule. First Week of School ~ This is the only week a student can request a schedule change. Forms to request a schedule change must be filled out. However, elective changes will not be made. For any academic course change to take place, counselors consult course selection forms, recommendations, waivers and the individual department for a school generated error. If an error is not found, an academic course change will not be made. AP and Honors courses may not be changed and students will remain in these classes they pre-registered for. Second through Sixth Week of School ~ Counselors continue to balance classes within contractual limits.

BENICIA HIGH SCHOOL * COURSE CATALOG * 2017 ~ 2018

Note: Students who drop a course during the first six weeks of the semester may do so without any entry on their transcript. GRADING SYSTEM Report Card grades are assigned as follows: A Superior B Better than average C Average D Below average F Failing or Withdrawal failure I Incomplete P Pass NM No Mark (Special circumstances) GRADUATION CEREMONY - In order to participate in the graduation ceremony, students must meet all course and credit requirements. The ceremony is not mandatory and diplomas may be issued without participating in the ceremony. If students wish to participate in the ceremony, they must display appropriate behavior, good attendance and have cleared their school fines. This is an important, formal ceremony that is very special to the senior class and their families.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION - All students must complete 20 semester credits of Physical Education. Students who have full semester medical waivers must complete the requirement at Benicia High School prior to graduation unless medical waivers continue to be in place through the end of the senior year. Only students who fail PE may make it up at summer school. You can buy your P.E. clothes during registration and they will be distributed to you during the first week of class. You MUST have your receipt to receive the clothes. PROGRESS REPORTS AND REPORT CARDS - All progress reports and report cards are available online via Power School. REDUCED SCHOOL DAY - Benicia High School is constantly working to provide the best education possible to our students. We conduct an ongoing review of our graduation requirements based on student data, college eligibility requirements, and skills required by employers. Students are no longer allowed a reduced course schedule unless they are concurrently enrolled in a community college course during both fall and spring semesters. All students will be expected to have a full schedule of six or more classes in their school day. This policy is supported by the requirements of Assembly Bill 1012, a state law that went into effect fall of 2016. When considering and selecting courses for next year, please take time to discuss educational and career goals in order to make the best use of your time at Benicia High School. TRANSCRIPTS - Transcripts are available in the Counseling Office during regular business hours. There is a $1.00 charge for each unofficial transcript and a $5.00 charge for each official transcript. You can also order a transcript by going to: bhs.beniciaunified.org VALEDICTORIAN/SALUTATORIAN - The students selected as valedictorian and salutatorian are chosen based on the top two weighted grade point averages in the graduating class. (Total GPA up to and including the 7 th semester to the third decimal place. Example: 4.250)

** ALTERNATIVE PROGRAMS ** There are two alternative programs that help to serve students who are having difficulty in the regular program at BHS. Students who fall 10-15 credits behind in any academic school year may be recommended to an alternative program. By the beginning of each school year, students must have completed the following number of credits to remain in the regular program: 10th grade – 50 credits, 11th grade – 100 credits, 12th grade – 160 credits.

LIBERTY HIGH SCHOOL - For those students age 16 and older, Liberty High School serves as a means to fulfill graduation requirements. Students have a smaller student/teacher ratio and are able to complete more credits during a semester than are possible at Benicia High. Students wishing to return to Benicia High from Liberty High must meet the following expectations: 

Show good attendance and behavior at Liberty High.

Complete all subject requirements for the appropriate grade level.

Attend an entrance conference with a counselor and/or vice principal and parent prior to re-enrolling at BHS.

Earn the minimum amount of credits for their grade level.

Note: A student may request a voluntary transfer to Liberty High School at the end of any grading period. Voluntary transfers are considered after an academic review and are only granted with administrative approval and parental consent. Transfers made are priority based and granted as space availability permits.

INDEPENDENT STUDY - This program is available to students whose needs are not being met by a regular school program. Students enrolled in Independent Study must complete the same graduation requirements as those in the regular program. Assignment to the Independent Study Program requires the mutual consent and agreement of the school, the Independent Study instructor, the parent/guardian, and the student. Independent Study does not meet admission requirements for a four-year college or university. Those students interested in the Independent Study Program should contact their BHS counselor.

Independent/Private Colleges and Universities ~ www.aiccu.edu or go directly to college site Independent or private universities and colleges have admission requirements that vary greatly. Information regarding programs offered and admission requirement can be found on their websites. While tuition may be higher at a private college, many school offer financial aid and scholarships. Community College ~ californiacommunitycolleges.cccco.edu Community Colleges offer a wide range of lower division courses for students who plan to transfer to four-year institutions as well as a variety of one-to-two year occupational programs to prepare students for employment upon completion of training. Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees as well as certificates are awarded upon successful completion of one-to-two years of prescribed study. For admission purposes, community colleges require students to be age 18, have a high school diploma, or have passed the CHSPE. In addition, they must be able to profit from instruction. In most cases applicants are required to take placement tests in English and math. Contact the community colleges for details. College Entry Exams and Tests for College Credit PSAT ~ The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) is offered in October at Benicia High School to juniors, and on a space available basis, to sophomores. This test gives students an opportunity to become familiar with the types of questions on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Junior students whose scores are exceptionally high may qualify as a National Merit Scholar or National Merit Scholar Commended Student. SAT I ~ The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is used by the University of California, the California State University system and most private schools as an admissions qualifier and a predictor of academic success in college. There are three sub-tests: critical reading, mathematical reasoning and writing. Scores range from 200-800 on each test. The application packet, available in the counseling office, lists the dates and fees. About five weeks before the test date, students must mail in the application with appropriate fees. Students are encouraged to register online at www.collegeboard.com or mail application at least 5 weeks before the exam. SAT II SUBJECT TESTS ~ Approximately 150 colleges nationwide require the Scholastic Aptitude Test II (SAT II). A university or college requiring these tests looks for subject mastery. Applications must be mailed in or register online at www.collegeboard.com. ACT ~ The American College Test is preferred by certain colleges over the SAT I, but public colleges in California will accept the results from either the ACT or SAT I for entrance. The ACT gives a score considered predictive of college achievement with subscores in English, math, reading, writing and science. The test is given five times a year and the application, available in the counseling office, must be sent in with appropriate fees about a month in advance of the test date. Registration can also be done online at www.act.org and is encouraged by ACT.

TESTS FOR COLLEGE CREDIT Advanced Placement (AP) Courses and Exams Advanced Placement courses provide a rigorous college level curriculum and prepare students for the Advanced Placement (AP) exam in their particular course of study. At the completion of these classes, students are encouraged to take Advanced Placement Exams. Most colleges and universities grant credit towards the baccalaureate degree for achieving a score of 3, 4, or 5 on advanced placement tests. Scores of 3, 4, or 5 may also exempt students from placement exams in selected college departments and may allow students to advance to higher level courses. AP Exams are administered at Benicia High School in the first two weeks of May, as scheduled by the College Board. Registration materials are made available to students in February.

Advanced Placement Classes Contract

BENICIA HIGH SCHOOL * COURSE CATALOG * 2017 ~ 2018

Benicia High School supports any student who wishes to enroll in Advanced Placement (AP) classes. Please remember that Advanced Placement courses are rigorous, college level courses. Students should be motivated to take an AP class by an appreciation for the subject. Any student signing up for an AP course should carefully consider the homework demands which can range from one to two hours per course per night. Students who are overextended with academics or extracurricular activities should give careful consideration to whether they have time to devote to an AP class and also to the number of AP classes that they can successfully complete. Benicia High School recommends a maximum of three AP classes. Students who are enrolled in AP courses are expected to: 1. Be independent learners willing to read, learn, ask questions, pursue outside reading and research, integrate and discuss material from diverse sources. 2. Meet any prerequisites prior to enrolling in an AP course, including possible summer work. 3. Prepare for and take tests on time. 4. Accept that enrollment in an AP course does not guarantee an A or B grade. 5. Spend more than the average amount of time on work outside of class. Students who enroll in an AP course and their parent/guardian must sign the following written contract: 1. I recognize that I have to demonstrate independence and responsibility. AP courses typically require more homework compared to non-AP college prep courses (approximately 1 to 2 hours per night). 2. I commit to remain enrolled in the AP courses I have chosen for the entire year (or semester for AP Gov). If special circumstances arise and I must drop an AP course, I understand there may not be space available in a college prep class. I understand I may have to delay taking a required class because of my drop. 3. I agree to uphold Benicia High School’s Academic Integrity Policy. I understand that Benicia High School has a strict policy against academic dishonesty and cheating in all classes. This is especially important in an AP course. Academic dishonesty can include, but is not limited to: plagiarism, copying work, providing an answer to a classmate, photographing and sharing materials, and discussing test answers outside of class in a way that provides helpful information to others. Academic dishonesty and/or cheating will result in a failed grade for the assignment or test and administrative consequences. Three incidents of academic dishonesty and/or cheating will result in being dropped from the course without credit. 4. I understand there may be a prerequisite for an AP course as outlined in the Benicia High School course catalog. By enrolling in an AP course, I certify that I meet these prerequisites. 5. I understand that by enrolling in an Advanced Placement course I am expected to take the corresponding exam in May. The exams do have a cost and funding support may be available for students with demonstrated financial need.

AP SEMINAR Prerequisite: None AP Seminar is a foundational course that engages students in cross curricular conversations that explore the complexities of academic and real world topics and issues by analyzing divergent perspectives. Using an inquiry framework, students practice reading and analyzing articles, research studies, and foundational, literary, and philosophical texts; listening to and viewing speeches, broadcasts, and personal accounts; and experiencing artistic works and performances. Students learn to synthesize information from multiple sources, develop their own perspectives in written essays, and design and deliver oral and visual presentations, both individually and as part of a team. Ultimately, the course aims to equip students with the power to analyze and evaluate information with accuracy and precision in order to craft and communicate evidence-based arguments. Teachers have the flexibility to choose one or more themes that allow for deep interdisciplinary exploration such as: concepts or issues from other AP courses, student interests, local and/or civic issues, academic problems or questions or global or international topics.

Career Technical Education (CTE) Pathway Program Benicia High School has committed to the expansion of career technical education curriculum for all students. Career technical education programs show many students the relevance of applied learning. The connection between school and careers after graduation results in increased student motivation to succeed in school. Our high-tech economy demands more highly-skilled workers. Many high-demand, high-wage jobs require training in technical skills along with academics. Career Technical Education is dedicated to preparing students for successful employment, college or continuing education, apprenticeships, and/or entrepreneurial opportunities. ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS: Selection of a career sector provides our students the opportunity for successful employment and/or post-secondary training. Selection also provides educational opportunities to enter the employment sector at a more advanced level. Provide a sequence of courses with curriculum that integrates employment skills relevant to that employment sector. Each Pathway will consist of a sequence of two or more courses. The Career Pathway listings below give recommendations for course sequencing, but may vary according to student interest and scheduling parameters. The goal is student exploration. Arts, Media and Entertainment (AME) This pathway includes occupations that use tools and materials as the primary means of creative expression. Artists and photographers use visual mediums as their tools in the same way writers, poets, and publishers use written mediums. The electronic and aural fields used in this pathway are constantly changing as technology evolves, requiring continuing studies to keep up. With the increasing use of art and design elements in daily life, the demand for jobs in this pathway will continue to grow. Note: Classes do not need to be taken in order. Introductory
