Sugar sector :
India is the largest consumer and second largest producer of sugar after - Brazil. Sugar and Sugarcane are notified as essential commodities under the - Essential Commodities Act 1955. The production of sugarcane during 2012-13 is estimated at - 334.54 million tonnes.

Government Schemes in Agricultural Sector:
National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture initiated under -Prime Minister's Council on Climate Change Bringing Green Revolution to Eastern India, initiated in - 2010-11. During 2012-13, the RADP (Rainfed Area Development Programme) is being implemented in - 22 states ISOPOM is - Integrated Scheme of Oilseeds, Pulses, Oil Palm, and Maize. NCCD is - National Centre for Cold-Chain Development The target of agriculture credit flow for the year 2012-13 was fixed at - Rs. 5,75,000 crore. Farmers will receive crop loans during 2012-13 with the interest rate of - 4 per cent per annum. NAIS is -National Agricultural Insurance Scheme NAIS is being implemented by - Agriculture Insurance Company of India Ltd. MNAIS is - Modified National Agricultural Insurance Scheme.
