Dear Mr. President

Step 1: Before reading the story, think about what you know about President Barack Obama. Write 5-7 things you know about him on your chart (what I know). Think about how his life might’ve been as a child and young adult. What do you want to know about President Barack Obama growing up? Write 3-5 questions on your chart (want to know). As you read, write the answers to your questions on your KWL chart. Write any additional facts that you find interesting as well.

Step 2: Read the story, Barack Obama: Son of Promise, Child of Hope, with a partner. Take your time and enjoy the illustrations as they help to tell the story. As you read make connections (text to self, text to world, text to text). In addition, talk about the story with your partner as you read. You can point out your connections, ask questions, make predictions, and share your thoughts and insight. Be sure to add what you learn about President Obama’s childhood on your KWL chart.

Step 3: Complete the graphic organize that will serve as your writing guide as you write your friendly letter to the president.

Step 4: Write a friendly letter to President Barack Obama. Use the friendly letter template and the rubric for support. Be sure to edit your rough draft before writing your published copy.
