December 2017

The Regal Eagle Brady Public School 112 East Popleton, Brady Nebraska

Wow! The school days are really flying by. Can you believe it's already December? Last month was a busy one with the Veterans Day celebration, Thanksgiving, Donuts with Dad, wrapping up both Jr. High Wrestling and High School Volleyball seasons, and then ending with all those days off! Whew! Now, with December, begins all basketball and the high school wrestling season, the Christmas concert, and gatherings for friends, family and co-workers. Not to mention: the food, gifts and all the social events we attend! This month will fly by too, however, do not forget to be safe, be kind, be giving and stop to enjoy everything going on around you. On behalf of Brady Public Schools, we wish each and everyone of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Tis’ the Season The monthly school newsletter provides an opportunity for the district to send reminders to patrons, parents and students. The December Newsletter will be full of events from the Christmas Concert to the start of Winter Activities it is a busy time of year. It seems like just a short time has passed since we held our annual Meet and Greet marking the start of another school year. These events along with others like: Donuts with Dad; Veterans Day Program; Halloween Parade; Senior Citizen Dinner and the Eclipse viewing help establish a culture. Alongside that culture, traditions are built. I am reminded during Christmas of some of the family traditions that were passed down to me. One tradition is of my father who took a great deal of time, patience, and pride in wrapping gifts. Every crease folded perfectly with all the edges lining up forming beautiful ends for taping. I marvel to this day as I struggle so the underneath paper doesn’t show white on a box end of a poorly wrapped gift by my two hands. My father was a polio survivor who lost an entire arm just below the shoulder. Yet could wrap the neatest gift. What I wouldn’t give for one more gift and that would be to have my father in the present. My father passed away two years ago, suddenly of a massive brain aneurism. I am reminded of him daily in how I value the present. At Brady Public Schools we have a staff that spends a great deal of time, patience, and pride in working with our gifts our students. I encourage all who have read this far to enjoy the talents and skills of our students attend an upcoming event, walk the halls and experience first hand the gifts that our students have. Value the hard work and effort that goes into competitions and performances. Finally take a moment during this busy time, live in the present because one never knows what traditions and values can start today. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays – James McGown, Superintendent of Brady Public Schools

Hand Hygiene and Health It is the time of year that various illnesses spread. Please review with your children (and practice yourself) correct hand washing procedures and emphasize the importance of doing so especially after using the washroom. If your children are sick, and especially when they exhibit any of the following symptoms: fever, stomach upset, vomiting and/or diarrhea they need to stay home and remain at home until they have been symptom free for a full 24 hours. Please ensure that your emergency contact information is up to date at the school office and that you have a plan in lace should your child(ren) need to be picked up from school if they are ill. Stay healthy!

The Brady Talon Booster Club Is asking for anyone who can, to please bring a dozen (or more) cookies (or bars) to the school social hour after the Christmas’s program Thursday, December 7th at 7PM. Cookies can be brought to the Commons Area prior to the program. Thank you!

FROM THE OFFICE: To improve the efficacy of our office, we ask that if it is necessary to pick up your child before the end of the school day, or if you are changing your child’s normal dismissal routine, please ensure that you contact the school office prior to 1:30pm. Our office is extremely busy at the end of the day and for safety and security reasons, it is essential that any change in plan is communicated to the office and your child’s teacher well in advance. Please note that if someone other than the child’s parent or guardian wishes to pick up a child from school, we require authorization in writing or by phone from the custodial parent / guardian before we will release the child to that individual. Thank you for your cooperation. *********************************************************************************************

Cold Weather and Outdoor Play Time spent outdoors is an integral part of the school day. Children need fresh air and exercise and time spent outside affords students an opportunity to break free from the structure of the classroom. With the Nebraska weather, time spent outside could mean anything from applying sunscreen to donning extra mittens and a hat, depending on the season. In the winter, it’s important children come to school prepared for the cold. Boots, mittens or gloves and hats should be worn to school and it’s a good idea to provide extra mittens, socks, etc. in the event they are needed. As always, principals can use their judgment in determining whether or not students remain inside during recess given the weather conditions. However, the Public Health and Community Services Department recommends individuals stay indoors when the temperature drops below 29 degrees Fahrenheit without wind chill. ********************************************************************************************* *

by Wade Bradford was the play performed by this year’s Brady One Acts troupe. I believe all of us know many people who have become serious wrestling fans after they learned about our sport. That old adage “The More You Know, The More You Will Enjoy!” certainly applies here. If our sport is to continue to grow in popularity nationwide, we must do a better job of explaining it. This article is written from a referee’s point of view and will help people understand faster. The following definitions are compiled from many coaches and referees in our sport, and they are rule and rule interpretation correct.

Wrestling information continued: WRESTLING - A combative sport where one wrestler tries to physically control the opponent against their will without injuring them. PHYSICAL CONTROL - To get behind the opponent’s back and arms, force them down to the mat, turn them over onto their back, and pin them. To take the opponent directly from their feet to their back without getting behind them, and pin them. To counter the opponent’s moves to stay in the control position. MATCH OR BOUT - When two wrestlers wrestle each other. Both wrestlers must weigh within one weight class of each other. You win a match by pinning your opponent, by scoring more match points than your opponent, or by disqualification if your opponent breaks certain rules. A MATCH in high school consists of three two-minute periods. The first period begins in neutral position with both wrestlers on their feet and facing each other. The second period begins with one wrestler choosing top, bottom, neutral, or deferring choice until the third period. The third period begins with the other wrestler choosing top, bottom, or neutral position. POSITIONS - Most sports have two scoring positions - offense and defense. 1. Wrestling has three scoring positions - offense, defense, and neutral. 2. You can only be in one of these positions at a time. 3. You can only score in certain ways from each position. 4. Scoring match points is just improving from defense to neutral to offense to a pinning position, in that order. 5. When one wrestler is in the neutral position, the opponent must also be in the neutral position. 6. When one wrestler is in the offensive position, the opponent must be in the defensive position. Offensive Position –On top, in control, the best position. Neutral Position – On the feet, no control, the next best position. Defensive Position – On the bottom, being controlled. The worst position. Match Stopped – when a referee stops the match and puts the players to the center of the mat to start again. Stalemate – Another referee stopped match when neither wrestler can improve their position. Potentially Dangerous – When a Referee stops a match where one wrestler may get injured by a legal or illegal hold. Referee’s Position – A starting position in the middle of the mat with one wrestler defensive on their knees and the other on one side parallel line and hands hown oth the other side of the parallel line. For mare information on match points and other details you can go to https://www.iahsaa.org/wrestling/Folkstyle_Wrestling_Basics_Phil_Henning.pdf

I appreciate Zoe's consistent efforts in the classroom. She values learning and takes her job of being a student seriously. I can depend on Zoe to listen to and follow directions, complete her work in a timely manner, and follow school and classroom rules. She is considerate of her peers and teachers, treating others with respect. I am proud to recommend Zoe for Student of the Month. -Ms. Shaw

Darissa is new here this year and has succeeded in putting her best foot forward. She has never shied away from a challenge, rising to each one. With her positive attitude and willingness to help, Darissa is an amazing addition to our school and community. She is a leader in her class and I expect great things from her in the future. – Mrs. Dyas

Macey Widick is deserving of this award. She is an amazing all-around individual for Brady Public Schools. She has always maintained one of the highest GPAs in the school no matter what grade and has been involved in several activities which have put Brady on the map. She was a starter for the Volleyball team which earned District Runnerup as well as a lead in the school's One-Act performance. She has always maintained a high standard of responsibility in my classes, and she has made sure when she is gone from class all work is made up in a timely fashion. She is a great example for our younger students to follow – Mr. Brownawell

Was a great hit! Nov. 22nd dads were invited to come have coffee, juice And, of course, donuts with our students. We had over 30 dads come in that morning making it the best turn out yet for Donuts with Dad!

Due to unforeseen events the Dec. 4th & 5th menu will be switched around.
