Purpose of the Role Provide professional leadership and high level speech pathology services to adults with swallowing and/or communication disorders within a community based rehabilitation service. Contribute to the advancement of quality speech pathology services and optimal patient care, in the speciality area of community rehabilitation, through provision of clinical leadership for service development, quality improvement, clinical education and research activities.

About the Hospital and Health Service/Division/Service Line The Community Rehabilitation Program provides a comprehensive multidisciplinary, community based rehabilitation service to adult clients over the age of 18 years. The program delivers a goal oriented, clientcentred, holistic model of restorative and adaptive therapy which focuses upon optimising functional capacity and quality of life. Clients of the service can be either transitioning from hospital to home or referred back from the community with identified rehabilitation needs. The service is based at the Robina Health Precinct and offers group based programs and individual therapy sessions which can be delivered at the precinct or within the client’s home. The multidisciplinary team delivers a broad range of clinical services including: Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology, Psychology, Neuropsychology, Social Work, Dietitian, Pharmacy, Nursing and Medical Consultation. Key Duties and Accountabilities  Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in accordance with Queensland Public Service and the Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service (GCHHS) values.  Deliver high level clinical speech pathology rehabilitation services to adults with swallowing and communication disorders, in the speciality area of community rehabilitation, within a multidisciplinary environment, and in accordance with prescribed professional and ethical standards.  Undertake high level speech pathology duties, of a complex and varied nature, with a high degree of professional independence.  Apply professional judgement to a complex caseload, adapting routine clinical practice based on valid and reliable evidence.  Undertake a leadership role in the identification, development and implementation of evidence-based clinical practices, procedures, protocols and education materials, to improve the delivery of speech pathology services within the Community Rehabilitation Program, engaging in cross-discipline referencing where relevant.  Actively contribute to local clinical education programs for speech pathology, medical, nursing and allied health staff and students, and participate in relevant clinical research activities.  Provide clinical advice to professional and operational supervisors, relevant service managers and other stakeholders regarding speech pathology service delivery and the development and improvement of clinical services.  Work cooperatively and effectively within teams and with clients/families to ensure high quality care. This includes attendance at case conferences, joint home visits, and negotiation with members of the multidisciplinary team and clients as to the type of intervention required, and liaising with patients and their families, other health professionals, supervisors, students and researchers, as required.

 Monitor and report on speech pathology clinical practices and outcomes and actively participate in the initiation, development and implementation of quality and service improvement activities that enhance the delivery of speech pathology services and improve patient outcomes, within GCHHS.  Provide clinical education and supervision, including lectures/tutorials, to students, and provide clinical practice supervision and competency training, to less experienced speech pathology practitioners to ensure that speech pathology professional clinical standards are maintained.  Demonstrate willingness to assume extra responsibilities consistent with skill level and classification e.g. this may include overseeing particular portfolio or project.  Follow defined service quality standards, occupational health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.  Take reasonable care for your own health and safety and take reasonable care to ensure that your acts or omissions do not adversely affect the health and safety of others.  Employees who are appointed to the GCHHS are to maintain data quality and manage all information in accordance with legislation, standards, policies and procedures.  Implement and monitor the organisation’s quality standards, occupational health and safety policies, procedures and programs and provide clinical governance in the relevant work area.

Mandatory qualifications/Professional registration/Other requirements  The possession of a tertiary degree in Speech Pathology, providing eligibility for practicing membership to Speech Pathology Australia. Certified copies of relevant qualification must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/manager, prior to the commencement of clinical duties.  It is a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment: [measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), pertussis (whooping cough) and [hepatitis B].  While not mandatory, previous post-graduate experience and/or targeted professional development in areas such as Modified Barium Swallow, Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT), voice, electrical stimulation, psycholinguistics, augmentative communication, chronic disease management and the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework, rehabilitation/community rehabilitation would be well regarded.  While not mandatory, previous experience in provision of high intensity models of care for people with aphasia and dysarthria incorporating individual, group, computer, therapy assistants and students would be well regarded.

Within the context of the responsibilities described above under ‘Key Duties and Accountabilities’, the ideal applicant will be someone who can demonstrate the following:  Ability to provide independent clinical services of a complex and varied nature with clinical decisions based on valid and reliable evidence  Extensive, clinical specialist experience and high level of knowledge, expertise and skill in delivery of clinical speech pathology services, to adult patients with swallowing and communication disorders, in the specialty area of rehabilitation.  Highly developed personal and effective communication skills and the ability to develop effective professional relationships with clients, colleagues, and stakeholders to influence clinical outcomes and encourage behavioural change.  Ability to initiate, plan and evaluate local service improvement initiatives in collaboration with team members and report on professional standards and quality outcomes from clinical practice.  Ability to provide clinical practice supervision to other clinical staff, assistants, support staff and students.  Ability to apply professional clinical evidence that support continuous quality improvement or formal research activities within a local service.
