Director: San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, San Francisco State University

San Francisco State University invites applications for a skilled and dedicated Director to lead the collaborative programs of the San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR; www.sfbaynerr.org). A unique and multi-faceted partnership, the San Francisco Bay NERR embodies the best attributes of each of its founding organizations: strong roots in the muddy wetlands that make up the Reserve sites; regional connections that improve stewardship of the entire San Francisco Estuary through meaningful science, education, and coastal management; and national perspective enriched by a network of diverse NERR sites around the country. The current interdisciplinary staff is small but growing and has expertise and passion for continuing to strengthen NERR programs. The ideal Director candidate will be an integrative leader with vision and management skills to support and expand the San Francisco Bay NERR.

The mission of the Reserve is to improve understanding and stewardship of San Francisco Bay, with broader relevance to ecosystems beyond the Golden Gate, and with a particular focus on the Reserve sites of China Camp State Park in Marin County and Rush Ranch Open Space Preserve in Solano County. Both sites have been largely protected from development and alteration and are widely recognized for their expansive tidal marshes and undeveloped adjacent uplands. These sites have long been a focus of environmental and ecological research and monitoring, providing important baseline data and serving as reference areas for the planning and evaluation of restored, enhanced, or created wetlands around the region. Reserve staff work collaboratively with scientists and other partners to improve and coordinate research within the Reserve sites, ensure that results from research inform management and decisionmaking, and engage communities with science and the estuary.

Key responsibilities of the Reserve Director include strategic planning, management of the Reserve programs and staff, outreach and communication at university, community, state and federal levels, pursuit of competitive grants and other fundraising opportunities, and fostering positive working relationships among the NERR’s many partner organizations. The position is based at San Francisco State University’s Romberg Tiburon Center, a center of excellence for research and training in estuarine and marine science, restoration ecology, and effects of climate change.

Applicants must possess an advanced degree in marine or estuarine science, science education, or science policy; success in administration and management of interdisciplinary work; excellent leadership and communication skills; and success in program development and strategic planning.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications; a complete benefits package is available. Find the full requirements of the position here: http://hr.sfsu.edu/Employment_HRMS/employment/jobs, following the links for Staff/Management Opportunities and Job ID# 5540 posted on 10/09/2014.

Submit letter of interest, a statement of leadership philosophy and experience, and a curriculum vitae to: Sheldon Axler, Dean of the College of Science & Engineering, San Francisco State University, 1600 Holloway Ave., Thornton Hall, Room 323, San Francisco, CA 94132. Electronic submission is encouraged, via email to [email protected]. Also arrange for at least three letters of reference to be sent to Sheldon Axler. All applications and inquiries will be kept confidential.

For more information, please contact the Reserve’s Research Coordinator, Matt Ferner, at mferner “at” sfsu.edu or 415-338-3724.

The position will remain open until filled; applications received by 17 November 2014 will receive full consideration. The ideal starting time for this position is Spring or Summer 2015. San Francisco State University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and strongly encourages applications from underrepresented groups.
