About this document…

Nationally, school districts are required to provide their communities with a report card of student progress in meeting the state standards. These standards include assessment in reading, mathematics, science, and writing, as well as attendance, graduation rates, and teacher qualifications. The New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) is used to determine progress as measured by the new accountability formula (Annual Measureable Objectives) in accordance with the NCLB waiver, for elementary school students in grades 3 through 5, middle school students in grades 6 and 8, and with the Maine High School Assessment (MHSA), part of which is the SAT. Based on the new formula, each subgroup has a goal for progress. If any subgroup does not show progress based on their goal, they will receive a designation determined by the state guidelines. All districts in Maine will use the Smarter Balanced Assessment in spring 2015. This assessment will assess proficiency of student achievement on the state common core standards for math and English language arts. RSU #57 has been using a district and school improvement process to identify areas in need of improvement to establish goals and objectives to address both short-term and long-term improvement. The NECAP and MHSA show student performance at one point in time. When assessing an individual student’s progress, classroom performance throughout the year is an appropriate measure. This report card includes trend data as measured by the Measures of Academic Progress Assessment through the NWEA. This assessment can be given up to 3 times a year to show progress being made in reading and math. In addition, assessments such as the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA2), Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS), Slosson, Scholastic Reading Inventory, Early Mathematical Thinking, and Scholastic Math Inventory are used to assess and measure growth in the areas of math and literacy. It is essential that multiple measures be used to provide reliable and valid assessment results in order to inform classroom instruction, intervention, and/or enrichment experiences.
