Many industries are located in the West Columbia/Cayce area. These industries can dump chemicals such as bleach or metals into creeks and streams. This is called pointpollution because the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) can “point” to the companies doing the polluting and make them clean up the pollution.

When people use harsh chemicals to wash their cars, these chemicals end up in the watershed. People can also put chemicals into the watershed when they change the oil in their cars or paint. If the oil, paint or paint thinner are poured into the yard, the chemicals make their way into the watershed. This is called non-point pollution because DHEC cannot “point” to the person doing the polluting.
