We use the Present Simple for permanent situations, routines, habitual actions and general truths. We use the Present Progressive for actions happening now, temporary situations and future arrangements (p. 7). Usamos el Presente Simple para situaciones permanentes, rutinas, acciones habituales y verdades generales. Usamos el Presente progresivo para acciones que están sucediendo ahora (en este momento) situaciones temporales y acuerdos en el futuro. Present Simple vs. Present Progressive. We use the Present Simple: Usamos el Presente Simple  For permanent states. Para estados permanentes.

We use the Present Progressive: Usamos el Presente Progresivo (continuo)  For temporary states. Para estados temporales. I’m taking driving lessons this month. Estoy tomando lecciones de manejo este mes.

Ben lives in London. Ben vive en Londres. 

For habits or actions that happen regularly.  Para hábitos o acciones que suceden regularmente. We always have breakfast at eight. Siempre desayunamos a las ocho.



For general truths. Para verdades generales. The Earth goes around the sun. La tierra va (gira) alrededor del sol.

For actions happening at the moment of speaking. Para acciones que están sucediendo al momento que se habla. Lucy is sleeping now. Lucia está durmiendo ahora.

Verbos de Estado The following verbs are not normally used in the Present Progressive. They are called stative verbs. Los siguientes verbos no son usados normalmente en el Presente progresivo. Ellos son llamados Verbos de estado.  See, hear, smell, taste, notice, seem, look (= Seem). Ver, oír, oler, probar, notar, parecer, ver (= Seem).  Like, dislike, love, hate, want, need, prefer, mind Como (gustar), no gustar (aversión), amar, odiar, querer (desear), necesitar, preferir, parecer (opinión).  Believe, think (= believe), know, understand, remember, forget, hope, mean, imagine. Creer, pensar, (= creer), saber, entender, recordar, olvidar, esperar (de esperanza), significar, imaginar.  Be, have (= possess), belong, cost.  Ser, tener (= poseer), pertenecer, costar.  

Ian paints portraits in his spare times. He’s painting a portrait of Leo today (p. 7). Ian pinta retratos en sus tiempos libres. Él está pintando un retrato de Leo ahora. I don’t understand why Betty doesn’t like her job. She travels abroad twice a month. Next week she’s flying to Canada. No entiendo, porque Betty no le gusta su trabajo.
