Kaikōura Community Pānui
Tēnā rawa atu ki a koutou katoa Many thanks to everyone!
It’s been an amazing year to be in the Kaikōura District. And for us here at Te Hā o Mātauranga, we are extremely grateful to all the organisations and individuals who have contributed, collaborated and joined us on our journey. We opened our doors in March 2017 with the aim of creating, promoting and encouraging learning opportunities in Kaikōura. Thanks to all the support we have received, we have managed to do some of the stuff we set out to do, and some more along the way with lots of ideas for what next. There’s been many people along the way, but I’d like to make special mention of Vicki Gulleford, our Community Connector and admin magician - Vicki is the best solution finder I know - where my first impulse is to ask someone else, Vic just says “leave it with me, I’ll work on it” - and she does!
Thanks Vicki!
The end of the year...
This can be a stressful time for families with busyness! Fitting in school events and special days, work functions and end of year socials with the various groups we are connected to. Add to that trying to find time to prepare for Christmas, maybe do a little crafting or baking, the financial pressure, the difficulty in finding just that special gift… Sometimes we need to stop and reflect on what is really important to us. Is it a gorgeous house and table decorations, food that looks like it was prepared by a chef, gifts under the tree? Or is it something else a sandwich at the beach, inviting a stranger off the street - whatever pushes your Christmas buttons, we wish you all the best and encourage you to be gentle on yourselves and kind to all. Christmas can also be a difficult time for those on their own. Is there someone you know who may be grateful for a little extra contact? Let’s work together to ensure our whole community has a safe and happy Christmas Season. Meri Kirihimete! Kaikoura Youth Council’s Xmas at the Beach Event!

Some of the stories from this year: Business Administration Course - It hasn’t always been easy, in this year of all years, to commit to a year of part-time study, but these six wonderful people who are completing their Certificate in Business Administration deserve accolades for their commitment to this course. And a massive thank you to ARA polytech for providing this in Kaikōura, and to Paul Finney, our local business admin tutor. Bring on our first graduation in July next year! We are also considering a second intake in 2018 so if you are interested, please register that with us. Timebank Crew - This is a great bunch of people that have come together for the last couple of months to suss out just what it will take to open up our very own Kaikōura Timebank. We are getting ever closer to being able to open in the new year. Timebanking is a cool way of exchanging skills within a community - members swap skills or labour to earn time credits that they can then swap with other members - “Do what you love to get what you need”. Keep an eye out for this new initiative in the new year. KD and Simone sharing cooking skills. Wizbang After School Programme: Georgia Laugesen and Paucha Morgan, two wonderful senior students at Kaikōura High School, were keen to investigate youth work and enrolled in a gateway Youth Work programme - to provide the practical component they worked with us at Te Hā to run an afterschool programme during terms two and three of this year - they called it Wizbang. They volunteered their Wednesday afternoons to come in and hang out with whoever turned up - they played games, ran activities and learned a bit about what it takes to run events like this. I love to see young people showing the commitment, the energy and passion to do this kind of thing and was super impressed with them both - big ups to you both, Paucha and Georgia! Another local enthusiast with passion, dedication and awesome skills is Ngaio Te Ua, one of our wonderful Whanau Ora navigators. On top of her navigator role, Ngaio has been tutoring a fantastic Te Reo Maori class, with a multi-cultural class of students including Brazilian, Italian, Swiss and pakeha! And everywhere we look is Hi-vis and road work trucks - Te Hā would also like to thank NCTIR for donating some of their waste wood to the Community Shed this lovely big pile turned up one afternoon and has been used for all kinds of projects since delivery! Don’t forget if you have a project you need help with, Pete and Dave are around at 14 Ludstone Rd in the Community Shed to help and support on Wednesdays 10-3pm. To cap it all off we’d like to acknowledge the All Right campaign, and particularly our local All Right hero, Rachel Vaughan, who has been bringing messages of empowerment and health via social media, hard copy posters and fun opportunities. Here’s some of the photos taken at the Amazing Place day, of our amazing people.

So, what’s coming up in 2018? We’ve got a few projects on the go - one of them is a Community Garden idea. There’s quite a lot of space at the back of the Community Shed and already we have some garden beds made up by the hard working lads from the Royal New Zealand Airforce - that was an awesome gift, thanks so much Lachie and your team. Some of our lovely volunteers have planted the beds up and they are already growing at a great rate! So the next step is to gather together a team interested in contributing to a community garden and designing the rest of the beds, working out how it might work and who wants to contribute and how we use the produce. To do this, we are issuing an invitation to a BBQ at 14 Ludstone Rd at 5pm on Weds 17 Jan - hopefully we’ll be eating salad from our gardens by then. All are welcome to come along to share and contribute. Participatory Science Project Earlier this year MBIE funded us to run a project that aims to create collaborative scientific research projects, guided by the interest of our local youth. So far we have engaged some passionate youth in this project and they have had the chance to explore what current researchers are doing in our post-quake marine environment. The changes have been huge and there are many unknowns. Our young people came up with some questions they were curious about, including... ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●
What, if any, new species or different species are expected to rebuild in the canyon? Are the seals repopulating? And how long do you think it will take? Food Chains - what is the ongoing effect? What kind of species were found in the canyon? How far will seals travel to re-habitat, or do they go the extra mile to re-habitat? How much of the Ohau point area has been destroyed? Are there more/less predators post earthquake? Will we see adaptations in marine life due to the earthquake? Silting - how much does the silting stop sunlight from allowing photosynthesis?
Guided by their interest, a research project around seal distribution is being created with our young people, DOC, University of Canterbury and NCTIR - and we are looking for volunteers who would like to be part of this - adults as well as young people. The plan is to monitor sites, counting and mapping seal locations, as well as reporting tourist interactions with seals, the time commitment will be dependent on how many volunteers we get. If you are interested in being part of this project, please contact Sarah 027 807 2874. Patricia Branco ran a Recycle and Create 8 week class funded by Creative Communities earlier this year the kids made all kinds of things out of all kinds of waste and had all kinds of fun along the way. And thanks to Creative Communities again, we have another project coming up - from the 17 January 3.30 until 4.45pm running for 8 weeks, Patricia is offering spaces for children to come along and create - contact Sarah to book.
