Demographic Data and the Demographic Transition Model Peel Geographers, Peel District School Board Students generally enjoy working with numbers when these relate to human situations. Such is the case with demographics. The chart below comprises countries which display a wide range of economic development. The degree of development may be explored by looking at the data which students will find in their most recent atlas. The teacher is able to develop a lesson simply on the “significance of the data” once the students complete the sheet. Each category of data should stimulate discussion.
Students will discover there are interesting anomalies. For example, they may be surprised by Canada having a higher death rate than Mexico. Further to this, the data on Births and Deaths may by plotted (vertical plots for each country) on the Demographic Transition Model to place each nation in it’s appropriate place on the model. The concept of “transition” can then be discussed.

THE MONOGRAPH Demographic Transition of Sri Lanka and Canada Activity The demographic transition of nations can be illustrated when comparing Birth and Death data, particularly of a Developing nation to a Developed nation. Here we have historical data which allows this comparison.
1.
Given the accompanying Birth & Death rate data, plot it. (Turn the graph paper sideways and plot time along the X-axis and rates along the Y-axis. Use an interval of 2 years for time and 1.5 for rate). Be careful to plot the data according to the spacing required for the graph.
2.
Review the information about stages in the D.T. Model and apply it to your graph. Draw vertical lines to identify the positions of past and present stages for both countries.
3.
Explain why you placed the limits of your stages for each country where you did.
Learning Objectives 1.
