Internship Opening Notice Volunteer Position: Communications & Development Intern Compensation: N/A, this is an unpaid internship Type: Temporary, 8+ hours per week Start/End Dates: Spring semester (January-May), min 3 mo. commitment, flexible start dates. Opportunity to extend through the summer. Schedule: Applicants should be available to work at least 5 hours per week in the office, Monday – Friday, between 10AM and 6PM (flexible); additional hours can be completed remotely About Us: Harlem Grown’s mission is to inspire youth to lead healthy and ambitious lives through mentorship and hands-on education in urban farming, sustainability, and nutrition. Our Farms & Facilities: Harlem Grown operates three soil-based urban farms, two school gardens, and one hydroponic greenhouse, and is currently building two new soil-based school gardens, as well as a new soil-based farm and hydroponic facility. Our offices and properties are located between 122 and 135 Streets in Central & East Harlem, Manhattan. Our Programs: Harlem Grown provides youth and community development programs focused on urban farming, wellness, and sustainability. Our youth focused programs include intensive school partnerships placing sustainability mentors in six public schools, as well as educational farm tours, summer camp, a Saturday enrichment program, and a workforce development program for at-risk young adults. Our community development programs include volunteer service opportunities, wellness workshops, special events, commercial and community food scrap collection for composting, and fresh farm produce distribution to participants, volunteers, and neighborhood residents.
Job Overview: Harlem Grown seeks an organized, go-getter to support fundraising efforts, as well as and marketing and communications strategies. The Intern will report to the Development & Communications Director, and work closely with other key staff on campaigns. Responsibilities: ● Work closely with Harlem Grown’s Development Director ● Update MailChimp listserv regularly and CRM regularly ● Help design campaigns and create written content to promote HG’s work via our website, social media, newsletter, and print materials, working closely with the COO and Program Director to ensure mission and programmatic alignment ● Work as a team member to support Harlem Grown initiatives and programs ● Serve as a role model for youth and reinforce Harlem Grown’s values of honesty, respect, and responsibility Qualifications: ● Excellent organizational, communication and project management skills ● Personable, friendly, positive team player able to build relationships with key funders and supporters ● Eager to learn more about the youth development and food justice ● Motivated, creative and punctual, able to work both independently and as part of a team ● Flexibility to work overtime, during mornings, nights or weekends, and willingness to work outdoors in summer heat or cold spring mornings How to Apply: Please send resume and cover letter to
