South Portland Middle Schools Project: Opportunity for our future October 5, 2016 Tonight we will work to answer four important questions: History: What has happened to lead up to this point? Process: What are we doing as a result of being added to the State “approved projects” list? Opportunities: What are options as we look at the opportunity before us? A Brief History • September 2004 the School Board voted to direct the Supt. to form a facilities committee to assess the conditions of the high school and both middle schools • October 2004‐February 2006 the Secondary Schools Facilities Committee studies the three schools • February 2006 the Secondary Schools Facilities Committee recommends to the School Board and the Council that the district apply for State funding for one consolidated middle school project • August 2007 State applications are expected to open • August 2007 State delays taking new applications • August 2010 State resumes accepting applications for building construction South Portland School Department COMMUNITY FORUM OCTOBER 05, 2016
A Brief History • August 2010 South Portland submits to the State individual applications for Mahoney and Memorial • 2010‐11 the State visits both schools. Mahoney receives a rating that puts them at #14 on the State construction list. Memorial finds itself at #55. • And then we wait……… • 2014 The School Board votes to reconvene the building committee to look at both middle schools as there is no word about State funding • August 2016 the State Board of Education votes to approve funding for #13 and #14 on the school construction list.
