Fashion Design Sewing Skills Test Students wishing to enroll in Fashion Studio 1 must pass a proficiency test or have taken the CCA Garments Structures class and passed with a grade of C or better. The proficiency test will include a supervised and unsupervised sewing exercise encompassing information, terms, techniques and skills considered essential for successful sewing in the studio classes. Students taking this test are expected to know the following: • • • •
How to operate a sewing machine How to sew a variety of seam samples How to insert zippers How to prepare fabric, cut out patterns and construct a garment from a commercial pattern and guide sheet
Excellent resources for test preparation are Reader’s Digest complete Guide to Sewing and Singer Sewing Essentials. The supervised portion of this test will be administered in a 3-hour afternoon session on CCA’s SF campus. The unsupervised part of the test will be completed at home using instructions for seam and zipper samples and blouse preparation. A sewing test packet, which includes instructions, a commercial pattern with fabric and contact information for the test administrator, can be acquired through the Fashion Design office. You may contact the Program Expert, Jean Oppermann,
[email protected], or Pam Zahedani,
[email protected], the Fashion Design Program Manager, to have a packet sent to you. You will need to have the packet at least a month before the test is scheduled.
