Message by Chairman, Hwa Chong Board of Directors This year, the Hwa Chong family celebrates 95 glorious years of establishment while Hwa Chong International School (HCIS) reaches its ten-year milestone. The Hwa Chong family has undergone remarkable transformation and development, ascertaining its reputation for providing quality education with a consistent pursuit of excellence. Through the array of carefully crafted academic and co-curricular programmes, HCIS students are exposed to a range of activities that grants them opportunities to realize their innate abilities and potential.
will now stand side-by-side, occupying the North and South ends of the campus along Bukit Timah Road, flanking the monumental Hwa Chong clock tower.
We have overcome the odds to fulfill the education mission of our forefathers, and soar to greater heights with impressive achievements over the years. Both Chinese High School and Hwa Chong International School have embraced and exemplified the spirit of the Hwa Chong family’s motto –自强不息, a ceaseless quest for excellence, in various arenas. HCIS now offers a unique paradigm for learning that nurtures students into independent, innovative and international-minded learners of tomorrow.
As we celebrate 2014 and unveil a new chapter in the history of HCIS, I would like to express our deepest gratitude to parents, students, alumni and all well-wishers for their support of the HCIS Expansion Project.
We certainly owe our successes to the dedicated team of educators who have enriched the HCIS education with their passion in teaching. The Class of 2014 had done us proud by attaining stellar results at last year’s International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Examinations, the best set of scores that we have produced since the founding of our school. We believe that with Hwa Chong’s collective efforts and teamwork, HCIS is destined to attain much greater academic successes in years to come. Notably, the conceptualization and rollout of HCIS’ ambitious expansion plans take centre-stage this year. The widely anticipated new teaching wing and tower block will be ready in January and June 2015 respectively. This is only made possible under the effective leadership of the Hwa Chong Board of Directors, and the close collaboration between the Hwa Chong family of schools and the Hwa Chong Alumni Association, which once again strongly demonstrates the unwavering Hwa Chong team spirit in action. With the completion of the HCIS’ new building, both HCIS and HCI

Principal
A few fundraising events were held this year and most notably, we had the pleasure of hosting a Fundraising Dinner and Musical performance in July. Our student performers took to the stage and put up an amazing show, showcasing their many talents beyond the classroom. Such student involvement is commonplace in the many bottom-up initiatives proposed by students. It is essentially this vibrancy of learning opportunities that fosters closer bonds amongst students and forms the spirit of the school community. Our educational pathway, though dynamic and international in outlook to equip our students with the essential skills to compete adequately in the global arena, remains deeply rooted in Asian values and the Chinese heritage.

World Cup 2014 Finals’ Screening @ HCIS This year, a couple of students from IB1 were given the opportunity to organize a live screening of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Final in the school’s Multi Purpose Hall. The planning and preparation began in the midst of June and we started to finalize the logistics when July came. In conjunction with the World Cup Final screening, there were other activities prior to the start of the match to help improve the atmosphere and also promote bonding and most importantly, to have fun. The activities were FIFA 14 Tournament, a Play-station 3 console game that is extremely popular among many football fans, and hence attracted a lot of students to join in the fun and compete for the top spot. We had a movie screening that was held in the Lecture Theatre during the event which allowed students to relax and mingle with each other over a movie. A few activities were also set up in the hall such as a penalty shoot-out, a drink store and other exciting games. Nicole Lam from 4B was kind enough to start up a face-painting station at one corner in the hall and charged students a low cost. This made the station highly attractive and each one of us wanted to get a flag painted on our arms, legs and faces.
atmosphere among the students. Everyone was kept in suspense as the match entered extra time until the only goal came in the 113th minute as German International, Mario Gotze broke the deadlock and volleyed the ball into the back of the net. This goal was enough to secure Germany as the 2014 World Cup winner since winning the World Cup in 1990 in Italy. The whole event came to a closure with the German fans going home with a smile on their face whereas the Argentina fans left gloomily. Overall, everyone who participated felt delighted while watching the final. By Kai Him Lee IB 1P
The final match between Germany and Argentina took place at 3 a.m. and everyone settled down by 2.30 a.m. It was an extremely close match between the two countries that created an electrifying

The event engaged many of my school mates from different nationalities. This also gave us a chance to better our public speaking skills, and a chance to investigate the topics with other debaters. It has helped to strengthen the bond between us. It has given us many valuable experiences to contest one another in a formal manner. To me this debate was more than just a debate. It was an opportunity to muster courage, and to speak ever so sophisticatedly and affirmatively. It was also a chance to strengthen my command of the language, and my ability to perceive information more deeply. “ Ashton Goh Year 3K – Ashton Goh participated in the Year 3 Debates

International Friendship day Have you ever dreamed of becoming an actor, dancer or performer? With the lights, the music, the screams all around us, we looked so beautiful and confident on the stage. However, the performers were not as ‘shiny’ as you see. The truth is that we, dancers, were all barefoot and running up and down in the school wildly like the real lions. Every single performer had at least four sets of costumes to change, each change having to be within less than 1 minute. The air was blisteringly hot. Almost a hundred people were packed like sardines backstage, our glamorous costumes wet and stuck to the skin. Everything was in a hurried and harried manner. No one would tell you where to enter from, when to enter, which costume to wear. We had to concentrate fully. It was a physical and psychological challenge for all of us, a full day performance requiring our energy, attention and confidence. This is how the backstage of IFD looked like, an unseen war! Everyone who was giggling about the crisis being a zombie apocalypse was forced to keep a straight face! Better still, delegates started to engage in heated debates on increasingly ridiculous solutions to the crisis (read: atomic bombing). Cue the scrambling and panicking.
