2. HEALTH HAZRAD INFORMATION EMERGENCY OVERVIEW This product posses lilte immediate hazarad. A single shortterm exposure to dry powder is not likely to cause serious harm. However, exposure of sufficient duration to dry mortar can cause serious, potentially irreversible tissue (skin or eye) destruction in the form of chemical (caustic) burns. The same type of tissue destruction can occur if wet or moist area of the body are exposed for sufficient duration to dry mortar Potential Health Efects Relevant Routes of Exposure: Eye contact, skin contact, inhalation, and ingestion. Eye Contact: Exposure to airborne dust may cause immediate or delayed iritation or inflamation. Eye contact by dry powder or splashes of wet product may cause effects ranging from moderate eye irritation to chemical burns and blindness. In case of such exposures, seek immediate first aid and/or medical attention.
MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET FOR WHITE MORTAR page 2 of 4 Skin Contact Exposure to dry product may cause drying of the skin with consequent mild irritation. Dry mortar contacting wet skin or exposure to moist or wet mortar may cause more severe skin effects including thickening, cracking, or fissuring of the skin. Prolonged exposure can cause severe skin damage in the form of (caustic) chemicals burns. Minimize skin contact, particularly contact with wet cement. Exposed persons may not feel discomfort until hours after the exposure has ended and significant injurry has occured. Some individuals may exhibits an allergic response upon exposure to this product, possibly due to trace amounts of chromium. The response may range from a mild rash to sever skin ulcers Inhalation This product may containt trace amount of free crystalline silica. Prolonged exposure to respirable free crystalline silica can aggravate other lung conditions and cause silicosis. A disabling and potentially fatal lung disease. Exposure to this product may cause irritation to the moist mucus membranes of the nose, throat, and other resopiratory system. It may also leave unpleasant deposits in the nose. Ingestion Although small quantities of dust are not known to be harmfull, ill effects are possible if larger quantities are consumed. This product should not be eaten FIRST AID Eyes Immediatelly flush eyes thoroughly with water. Continue flushing eye for at least 15 minutes. Including under lids, to removal all particles. Call a physician immediatelly. Skin Wash skin with cool water and pH-neutral soap or a mild detergent. Seek medical treatment in all cases of prolonged exposure of wetproduct, liquids form fresh product, or prolonged wet skin exposure to dry product. Ingestion Do not induce vomiting. If conscious, have the victim drink plenty of water and call a physician immediatelly. Inhalation Airborne Dust Remove to fresh air. Seek medical help if coughing and other symptoms do not subside. ("inhalation" of gross amounts of this product require immediate medical attention). 3. PRECAUTION FOR USE MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDATIONS Keep exposure to dust as low as practical, if inspirable dust level are kept below 2 mg/m3, health problem such as skin, eye and respiratory irritation may be minimized. Avoid repeated skin contact with wet mortar. Note : Contact lenses posses a special problem: Soft lenses may absorb irritans and all lenses concentrate them. Do not wear contact lenses in the dusty area.
MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET FOR WHITE MORTAR page 3 of 4 ENGINEERING CONTROLS Avoid Generating dust. All work with white mortar should be carried out in such a way to minimize exposure to dust and repeated skin contact. Use local mechanical ventilation or extraction in areas where dust generated whilst handling dry mortar, could escape. For handling, follow safe manual handling practice. Work areas should be cleaned regularly by wet sweeping or vacuuming. If generating dust can not be avoided, see personal protection recommendattions below. PERSONNAL PROTECTION Skin Protection Prevention is essential to avoiding potentially severe injury. Avoid contact with unhardened product. If contact occurs, promptly wash affected area with soap with water. Where prolonged exposure to unhardened cement products might occur, wear impervious clothing and gloves to eliminate skin contact. Where required, wear sturdy boots that are impervious to water to eliminate foot and ankle exposure. Do not rely on barrier creams; barriers creams should not be used in place of gloves. Periodically wash areas contacted by dry mortar or by wet mortar with a pH-neutral soap. Wash again at end of the work. If irritation occurs, immediatelly wash the affected area and seek treatment. If clothing becomes saturated with wet concrete, it should be removed and replace with clean, dry clothing. Respiratory Protection Avoids action that cause dust to become airborne. Use local or general ventilation to controls exposures below aplicable exposure limit. Use NIOSH approved respirators in poorly ventilated area, if an applicable exposure limit is exceeded, or when dust causes discomfort or irritation. Ventilation Use local exhaust or general dilution ventilation to control exposure within applicable limits. Eye Protection Where potentially subject to splashes or puffs of mortar, wear safety glases with side shields or goggles. In extremely dusty environments and unpredictable environments, wear unvented or indirectly vented goggles to avoid eye irritation or injurry. Contact lense should not be worn when working with this product or fresh mortar product. STABILITY DATA Stability Condition To Avoid Hazardous Polymerization Hazardous Polymerization Incompatibility
: Stable : Unintentional contact with water : Will not occur : Will not spontaneously occur. Adding water produces (caustic) calcium hydoxide : Product mixed with water is alkaline. As such it is incompatible with acids, ammonium salts and phosphorous
4. SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION STORAGE AND TRANSPORT The product should be stored and transported in a manner to prevent ingress of water and emission of dust
MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET FOR WHITE MORTAR page 4 of 4 FIRE AND EXPOLSION HAZARD This product is non-flammable and does not cause dust explosions. Does not support combustion of other material. SPILLS AND DISPOSAL Spills Spills may be vacuumed or swept. Avoid generation dust. Coolect spilled material and seal in clean, dry, labeled container for disposal. Clean-up personnel should follow the precaution outlined in section 3, Precaution for use. Disposal
