Mungo National Park Fly/Coach 8 days October 12 - 19, 2017
As you traverse across 4 states, your journey through the Murray Outback is certain to bring alive this vast expanse of diverse landscapes. Travel from Adelaide through the vine-strung hills of the Barossa, the orchards through Berri and Renmark and the riverland fields around Mildura, nestled on the banks of the mighty Murray. A local guide will help you to explore the World Heritage listed area of Mungo National Park, which was once part of several grazing properties. See the ancient dunes known as ‘The Walls of China’ and the Mungo woolshed, which was built from local cypress pine around 1869. On our way to Griffith, we travel via Hay where the Murrumbidgee River is a great water source for the surrounding agricultural lands and famous sheep studs. Learn about the importance of the telescopes dominating the skies around Parkes and journey through cotton fields which stretch as far as the eye can see around Goondiwindi before making our way back to Brisbane.

ITINERARY Meals as indicated B = Full Cooked Breakfast, L = Lunch, D = Dinner Day 1 Thu Oct 12 LD Today is the start of a very exciting and unique tour which will take you through four states. As you fly out of Brisbane, sit back and relax before being met at Adelaide airport. Once aboard your Cross Country Tours coach, travel through The Barossa which is Australia's richest viticultural and winemaking region and see the very beautiful towns of Tanunda and Nuriootpa on the banks of the Para River. As you pass through Blanchetown on the majestic Murray River, view Loch 1 before arriving into Renmark - the heart of the oldest irrigation area in Australia. Stay overnight at the Comfort Inn Citrus Valley Motel (Ph 08 8586 6717). Day 2 Fri Oct 13 BLD Travel today on the Sturt Highway into Victoria through the arid desert plains, arriving in to the oasis of Mildura. This enticing place presents first-hand, the easy going personality of the bush and a great jump off place to visit a diverse array of landscapes and attractions. In days past, the Murray was one of Australia's greatest trading routes and there is nothing that evokes that bygone era better than an historical cruise aboard the Paddlesteamer Melbourne. Enjoy an orientation of Mildura before settling in at the Country Comfort Boulevard Motor Inn, Mildura (Ph 03 5023 5022) for 3 nights. Day 3 Sat Oct 14 BLD Another beautiful day is in store as you visit the Australian Inland Botanic Gardens. Although planned from 1983, planting only commenced in 1991. It has now reached an international standard which reflects the dedication of the surrounding community to achieve this in such arid conditions. Just over the Murray River in Buronga, visit a family owned and operated olive grove - Varapodio Estate where we will take a tour of the grove and processing facility and talk about all things including propagation, irrigation, harvesting and pruning of the olive tree. After working up your appetite, sit back and enjoy a scrumptious home cooked lunch before continuing on to Trentham Estate Winery where the cellar door will be open for a tasting of their finest wines. Return to the motel to freshen up before dinner. Day 4 Sun Oct 15 BLD Today we travel north from Mildura and head towards Mungo National Park, part of the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area and traditional country of many aboriginal tribes. The dunes at 'Mungo' are known as the 'Walls of China'. Be in awe at the massive red river gums and explore the original timber woolshed. A local guide will give a greater understanding of the significance of the entire Murray Outback Region and what it means
to the indigenous inhabitants and the immense pride they have in the history of their people. This whole day is certain to be one that will go down as 'outstanding' when comparing Australian destinations. Day 5 Mon Oct 16 BLD As we farewell Mildura, traverse the Sturt Highway to another border town on the Murray - Robinvale. This small town is almost surrounded by the twists and turns of the Murray River and the land is ideal for the production of dried fruit and wine grapes. The next part of our journey takes us into wool, cattle, wheat and timber country as we travel to Balranald, situated on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River. Continue on via Hay - another oasis on the Murrumbidgee before arriving in Griffith, a now thriving city which was designed by Walter Burley Griffin. Stay overnight at The Kidman Wayside Inn (Ph 02 6964 5666). Day 6 Tue Oct 17 BLD Today our journey takes us via Bilbul and Barellan, with opportunity to see the tennis courts which started Evonne Goolagong on her mission to become one of the world's top players. Continue on through Ardlethan, the small rural town that claims to be the birthplace of the Kelpie Sheep Dog and see the bronze statue the community has erected to celebrate the fact. Travel via West Wyalong and on to Parkes for a catered lunch before visiting the CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope Visitors Centre for a guided tour. Learn the importance of this icon of Australian science and how it contributes to many space missions. This afternoon, arrive into Dubbo for our overnight stay at the Matilda Motor Inn (Ph 02 6882 3944). Day 7 Wed Oct 18 BD After breakfast, we depart the 'Queen City of the Golden West' and travel on to Gilgandra on the Castlereagh River. Further north, see Coonabarabran before our journey takes us through the Pilliga into Namoi country. Today your Coach Captain will stop at a suitable point, allowing time for you to purchase your own lunch. This afternoon, we cross the border into Queensland before arriving at the Jolly Swagman Motor Inn (Ph 07 4671 4560), Goondiwindi for our overnight stay. Day 8 Thu Oct 19 BL Today we travel through the Southern Downs via Inglewood and on to Warwick for lunch. This afternoon, as we make our way back into Brisbane, take time to reflect on the journey we have made across four states and the memories and new friendships made. On arrival, your Coach Captain and Hostess will have your transfers arranged. Thank you for choosing Cross Country Tours for your holiday; we look forward to seeing you out on tour again soon.
