Pioneering. As I look at the last 11 years of being on staff with Campus Crusade for Christ, God has always involved me in pioneering work, whether it be overseas in Asia helping in year 2 of opening up a new city, starting up a new Asian American ministry at the University of Texas in Austin, or reopening the campus ministry in New Orleans post-Katrina. Even before joining staff with CCC, I was the first youth director at Fort Bend Community Church when it first planted. And now, itʼs no different, as Amber and I are into year 2 of pioneering Ethnic Student Ministries in Denver. But as we trust God and join with Him in reaching the ethnic minority college students (namely, Latinos and Asian Americans as a focus for now), this has arguably been the toughest assignment Iʼve ever had. A metro setting with so many campuses; a downtown campus with over 50,000 students who are pretty much all commuters; and no other ministries focusing their efforts in reaching the ethnic minorities; are all factors contributing to the complexity of our ministry.

My desire when writing our newsletters is to fill it with pictures and stories of record numbers of students coming to faith; that our movement is growing to numbers beyond anything we could ever imagine. But that is not the case. Instead, I feel our ministry is more like that of the prophet Jeremiah. As one commentator described: “Jeremiah's ministry covered about forty years, and during all this time the prophet never once saw any signs of success in his ministry. He was called to a ministry of failure, and yet he was enabled to keep going for forty long years and to be faithful to God and to accomplish God's purpose: to witness to a decayed nation.” Amber and I have not been in Denver for forty years. But what if we were to be here for forty years and still only have a fledgling Bible study of 3 students? What if we continue to share our faith on campus, and no one ever puts their faith in Christ? Is our investment of our time and energy or your investment of resources

This morning, I found it really difficult to find the motivation to get moving. And a friend of mine reminded me: “Go to campus & just watch people. It will give you vision for the lost.” It was exactly what I needed to hear. Even if no students ever decide to put their faith in Christ, pursuing them with the message of the gospel is so worth it. The gospel of the One who transfers them from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light IS worth it!
