Project Description The main project objective is to reduce the amounts of POPs omitted from improper handling of plastic bottles in Debar and Debar Lake through their organized collection and recycling and achieving local economic development and environmental benefit. Activities: • Educate and motivate 1,000 students for selection of plastic waste in their families. Include practical education of students by pressing the bottles in primary schools, raising awareness of about 30 employees in restaurants and hotels in the municipality of Debar • Organize collection and transportation of plastic waste by placing a 7 special containers for plastic waste and plastic bottles • Creating income for the community through recycling plastic waste (the funds from the sale of the bottles will be donated to the schools to cover the cost of ecological events and other activities related to the preservation of the environment). Project achievements • Through joint involvement and cooperation among the schools, local business sector (restaurants and bars), Public Utility Enterprise and citizens of Debar, the management of plastic waste in the Local Municipality of Debar was established. Improved and increased cooperation between the civil sector and the Local Municipality of Debar in solving problems of common local interest. • Organized 11 workshops that motivated and educated 1,000 students and 30 staff in local restaurants and bars on the importance of selecting and recycling plastic waste, thus saving energy, valuable resources and protecting the environment; organized two tailored workshops for representatives of the local rural communities and employees of the Public Utility Enterprise for managing system for plastic waste selection; • Developed, printed and distributed information leaflet (500 copies in Macedonian and Albanian language) through which the local population was informed about the importance of recycling plastics and consequences on environment from littering plastic waste. Informed 10,000 citizens on the harmfulness of dioxins and furans through video which was broadcasted on the local television TV Dibra. • Established functional system of selection, collection, transport and sale of plastic with 7 PET waste collection points in three educational facilities (schools) and 4 restaurants; Purchased equipment for pressing and baling of plastic bottles; Purchased 3 motorcycles with transportation cart for collection and transportation of the plastic waste. • 3.6 tons of waste plastic bottles collected instead of releasing dioxins and furans. Follow up The grantee will continue with the current activities and organization of new complementary activities such as encouraging the local rural communities to promote plastic recycling by educating and encouraging local population to select and recycle plastic waste, and motivating small businesses sector, dealing with plastic waste, to join the initiative regardless of its profitability.
