Welcome to the electronic application system for Vernon Hills High Schoolspecific scholarships! Please peruse the scholarships offered in this book and then apply via the Google forms. Remember that all of these scholarships will be awarded to VHHS students… You can’t win if you don’t apply!
The Vernon Hills branch of Fifth Third Bank is pleased to offer a $500 scholarship to a VHHS graduating senior. Criteria: • Active involvement in their community • Given back to their community during their high school years • Financial need will be considered • Essay (500 words max.): How will your active involvement in the community and your community service experience help you with your future plans?
JACKIE FERGUSON MEMORIAL ESP SCHOLARSHIP Award: Minimum of 7 scholarships for $1,000 each Jackie Ferguson was a woman of great character. As a VHHS Educational Support Personnel (ESP) she embodied the meaning of the words perseverance, fun, dedication, kindness, thoughtfulness, and giving. She cared deeply for our students. Even though Jackie did not have a college degree, she strongly believed in it and its value. Therefore,in her honor the ESP of VHHS are pleased to offer a minimum of 7 scholarships for $1,000 each to deserving VHHS graduating seniors. Criteria: • Plan to pursue post-high school education • 2.5 minimum GPA • Participation in VHHS activities/school spirit • Essay (250-500 words) Choose one of the following: 1. What factors, circumstances, individuals, and/or experiences have been influential in your decision to pursue a higher education? Describe how the above will help you in the future. 2. Describe yourself and how you have overcome some difficulty in your life. How has this event or moment changed you for the better? How has it led you to choose to continue your education and/or major in the field that you currently want to pursue? 3. What qualities do you possess that will positively impact those around you? And how do you think pursuing a post-high school education will help you make a difference in your community or the world, in the years to come? Please give one or two examples.

FIFTH THIRD BANK SCHOLARSHIP Award: $500
This scholarship is given in memory of Jane Anne Schuster and is dedicated to her love of piano and music. The Jane Anne Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a Vernon Hills High School graduating senior. Criteria: • Participation in VHHS Fine Arts program • Academic merit • Financial need • Participation in school/extracurricular activities • Extenuating circumstances will be considered • Essay (500 words max.): How has your life experience been enhanced by the fine arts? How will that affect your choice of college and/or major?
JIM SMITH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Award: $500 This scholarship is given in memory of Jim Smith and is dedicated to his love of athletics and running. The Jim Smith Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a Vernon Hills High School graduating senior. Criteria: • Participation in VHHS Cross Country or Track teams • Participation in extracurricular activities • Extenuating circumstances will be considered • Essay (500 words max.): How has your life experience been enhanced by running? How will that affect your worldview as a college student and beyond?

JANE ANNE SCHUSTER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Award: $500
The Joyce Kolton Memorial Cougar Scholarship for Academic Excellence, Community Service, and Leadership will award one $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior. Criteria: • 3.0 GPA minimum • Attending a four-year college • Involvement in community/school service • Financial need will be considered • 250-300 word essay: Describe how you have grown and developed as a person throughout your high school years.
SHAAN ARORA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Award: $500 The Shaan Arora Memorial Scholarship is given in memory of Shaan Arora. Shaan was in Karen Martin’s Special Education classroom and graduated from VHHS in 2015. He left us at age 20 on April 20, 2016. Shaan touched so many lives in his short life, and every life he touched was enriched by his presence. He had a love for computers, technology, food, and Bollywood music. He loved school and was a popular guy who made everyone smile. Criteria: • Any VHHS senior who has a disability or has overcome a disability. • A 250-word statement: Describe your disability, experiences and/or how you overcame the disability.

JOYCE KOLTON MEMORIAL COUGAR SCHOLARSHIP Award: $1000
The District 128 Federation of Teachers is proud to award the Sharon Arbiture Union Scholarship to a graduating VHHS senior. Sharon Arbiture was a teacher for 30 years, with nearly 20 years in Community High School District 128. She taught English, Speech, Debate, and she shared a love of reading widely and writing well with her students.She was a founding member of the First Class character education program (now called VHGIVE) and was the sponsor of Interact Club. Her fellow teachers are proud to honor her with this scholarship. Criteria: • Average to above-average grades • Have definite plans to gain education and training toward a teaching career • Active involvement in school and/or community programs • Demonstrate personal qualities of determination, leadership, responsibility, and honesty • Provide two VHHS teachers as references • Essay: What has given you the desire to pursue the career of teaching? What characteristics do you possess to become a successful teacher? How are you preparing for your future as a teacher?
STUDENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIP Award: $500 The Student Assistance Program (SAP) committee of Vernon Hills High School is offering one $500 scholarship to a deserving VHHS graduating senior. The recipient of this award must be able to demonstrate that he/she has grown and matured over the past four years and has been committed to his/her high school education. Criteria: • Plans to pursue post-high school education or technical training • Letter of recommendation from a teacher, mentor, or community leader who has observed the student’s growth (if you have a letter of recommendation in Naviance, that letter may be used) • 2.0 GPA • Essay (500 words max): How have you matured over the course of your high school career?

SHARON ARBITURE UNION SCHOLARSHIP Award: $750
The Robert N. Molitor, Jr. Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a Vernon Hills High School graduating senior. The scholarship was founded in Robert’s memory and is dedicated to his passion for life and community service as a beloved member of the Vernon Hills Lions Club. Criteria: • Community service • Academic merit • Financial need • Extenuating circumstances will be considered • Essay (500 words max.): How has your community service experience(s) benefited both the community and you as an individual?
