Message from the Superintendent, Matt Zoph November is here! Turkey day and Black Friday are around the corner. We’re over 25% finished with the year. We have had a good start to the year, our fall activities and athletics are about to wind down. I’m very proud of how well our students competed and performed. If you haven’t been to a board meeting lately, I invite you to come. It’s a great way to keep up on school and the board is honoring the achievements of a different building every month. This is our 2nd year of Professional Learning Communities (PLC’s) and we are focusing on Common Formative Assessments (CFA’s). The teachers have been working hard creating assessments that are aligned with the new state standards and allow them to measure if students are mastering the standards. The ultimate goal is that teachers will be able to use these assessments to change how they can better teach our students. Last year we saw gains in student achievement. It was the first step of several, to get where we want to be. I would like to end by thanking everyone, the community, the staff and my family for all the support you given me and the school, this past year. This truly is a special place!

Matt Zoph Superintendent

Middle School News: Allen Davis, Principal MS recently completed their Fall benchmark testing: We showed significant success in both Reading and Math. 7th and 8th Grade Reading scores were vastly improved from last year with 78% of 7th graders and 81% of 8th graders at grade level. This supported our growth in the MAP ELA scores that went up in all grade levels. We will be improving our Response to Intervention program for all students. We are adjusting our Connect classes by placing struggling students with core teachers for additional help. We also will be providing after school tutoring for selected students. Thank you to all the parents and students for making school a priority for our MS students. The MS has 93% attendance to date.

CLAWS to PAWS The Middle School adopted O.H. Herman Middle School in Houston, Texas. Well over $8,000 worth of donations were delivered to this school last month. The Jefferson County Leader had a great article on our students. Winning students that donated the most were 8th: Adam Steffens, 7th: Danielle McClune, and 6th: Nora Koranda. Thanks to Mr. Holland, Mr. Ketcherside, Mr. Cagle and Mr. Cook for organizing this outreach.

Mrs Villmer has been working with all of our grade levels, sharing with our MS students about character. She is currently working with our 7th and 8th graders. The MS Football Leadership lunches with Coach Dallas and Mrs. Villmer have been very successful. Our goal at the MS is to develop young men and women who are well-rounded and giving back to community.

The MS Fall Dance was a huge success. The costume winners for best costume were 1st place: Kelsey Ramsey as a windup doll; 2nd place: Annabelle Wakeland and Chloe Stuart as Tall and Venti Starbucks, and Olivia Geist as a black and white clown.

Winter sports pictures will be taken on November 13th.

MUSIC NOTES Volleyball ended their season well. 8th grade took 2nd place in the JCAA tournament, almost beating undefeated Jefferson R7. Red-Ribbon Week was the last week of October. Students had a door competition, dressed up throughout the week and ended the week with a pep rally. Red Ribbon Door winners are 1st: Ms. Ketcherside's Drugbuster door, 2nd: Mrs. Shropshire's Headline/Headstone door, 3rd: Dr. Van Houten's Waterboy door.

Middle School Bookfair November 13th – November 17th Open daily from 8am – 2:30pm in the Middle School library, and open November 14th from 5pm – 7pm.

October 7th, the band went to a marching festival at Washington HS. There were 4 bands competing in our class and we won! We won 1st place overall in the Preliminary Round and also won: OUTSTANDING MUSIC, OUTSTANDING VISUALS, OUTSTANDING PERCUSSION, and OUTSTANDING COLOR GUARD. Since we received the highest score in our class we advanced to the finals round where we competed against the big schools ( like Troy Buchanan and Fort Zumwalt). We ended up in 10th place in finals but our score improved 4 points between the two performances. I believe the last time the marching band from Grandview made it to finals and won 1st place in their class was in the fall of 2006. The best part of the day, however wasn't the fact that we won. It was the fact that our kids performed the best I have ever seen them perform. They performed with confidence and pride. I am very proud to have a FANTASTIC group of young people to be working with every day and very proud that they have made the Grandview R-2 name something to be proud of. October 14th the Bi-State Marching Band Festival was held at Potosi High School and our Eagle Pride Band placed 1st in the small band category!! We also won Outstanding Percussion and Outstanding Color Guard in the Preliminary Competition! By winning 1st place the band was able to perform again in the finals competition that evening and they raised their score by 2 points from their prelims performance! This was our last competition of the season and our seniors last competition of high school for marching band. I am super proud of these kids and all the hard work and dedication they have put in since this summer. I'm very excited to finish our season with 2 1st place wins and multiple caption awards! Chrystal Lee and Kelsey Ramsey made the East Central #7 All District Jr High Honors Band that takes place November 11th. Way to go ladies!

The HS Student Council will be doing a can food drive the week of November 13th – November 17th.
