English literature What is literature? Literature is written works such as books, plays and poems that are very good and considered to be important. What is English literature? English literature is literature written in the English language. It includes authors that did not come from England, for example authors from Wales, Scotland, Ireland and British colonies. What types of literature are there? Novels, poetry and plays are all types of literature. Who wrote old English literature? There are many authors of old English literature. Some of the most famous are William Shakespeare, William Wordsworth and Jane Austen. Who writes modern English literature? There are also many authors of modern English literature. Some of the most famous are C.S. Lewis, Roald Dahl and J.K Rowling. What is the most famous English literature? Some examples of famous English literature are Romeo and Juliet (by William Shakespeare), Pride and Prejudice (by Jane Austen), The Chronicles of Narnia (by C.S. Lewis), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (by Roald Dahl), Harry Potter (by J.K. Rowling). All of these have been made into films.

William Shakespeare William Shakespeare was born in April 1564 and died in April 1616. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor and writer. He wrote 38 plays and also many poems in his lifetime. He lived in Stratford-upon-Avon, in Warwickshire, England. His plays are of different kinds, or genres. There are histories, tragedies and comedies. He was involved in the building of the Globe Theatre in 1599. It was destroyed by fire on 1613. A second Globe Theatre was built in the same place in June 1614 and closed in 1642. A modern reconstruction of the Globe, called "Shakespeare's Globe", opened in 1997 close to where the original theatre was. Shakespeare stopped writing in 1613, 3 years before his death in 1616. Maybe this was because many theatres were often closed due to the plague. Shakespeare’s plays are some of the best in English literature and are studied in schools around the world. They are still performed today.
