Brunel University London – Suzanne Leroy Drivers of Pontocaspian biodiversity Rise and Demise: palaeobiological proxies of lake basin and catchment dynamics Brunel University London is looking for candidates with a background in micropalaeontology and proxy development and an interest in interdisciplinary geologicalclimatological research in the Pontocaspian region (Black Sea, Caspian Sea and Anatolia and surroundings). The successful candidate will be employed as Early Stage Researcher and enrolled as PhD student to complete a PhD thesis within the contract period of 3 years to develop palaeobiological proxies of lake basin and catchment dynamics in Pontocaspian Basins (Black Sea, Caspian Sea) during the Quaternary. Dinoflagellates are part of the phytoplankton and produce cysts that are well preserved in the Pontocaspian fossil record. The dinocysts alongside other palynomorphs (pollen, spores, non‐pollen palynomorphs) will be used to assess changes in paleoenvironmental conditions during the Late Pleistocene and Holocene in the Black Sea, Caspian Sea and the Aral Basin. Once these three sequences covering the same period are obtained, it becomes possible to improve the understanding of the biogeographical connections between and catchment dynamics of the basins. Possible drivers of turnover (isolation and/or rapid environmental change) will be explored further in conjunction with data obtained from the other projects in the PRIDE program. Thus, this project aims to reconstruct the palaeoenvironmental conditions in Late Quaternary Pontocaspian lakes from biological proxies in order to assess basin connectivity and dynamics. The project will include a secondment at Utrecht University (NL) to integrate data with stratigraphy and for specialist dinocyst identification techniques.
