WELCOME We want to welcome back our students who are returning from last year and also offer a special welcome to the many new parents and students who have enrolled for the 2016-2017 school year. Enrollment at Wilmot this year will be approximately 330 students in kindergarten through fifth grade, plus 70 students in preschool. HISTORY OF THE WILMOT FAMILY Dwight Porter Wilmot established the Wilmot family in Evergreen sometime between 1875 and 1880 and distinguished himself, and the Wilmot name, through his pioneering efforts and community leadership. Among the many influences Mr. Wilmot had on this area was the distinction of providing the town with the name “Evergreen.” D.P. and his wife, Libbie, had one son and one daughter. The son never married and so the Wilmot name did not continue on in Evergreen. The daughter, however, married the son of another prominent family, the Herzmans. D.P. Wilmot was the president of the Evergreen School Board in the 1920s. He was posthumously honored as the namesake for Wilmot Elementary when construction began in 1962. In the year 2000, the school went through a major remodeling which razed most of the original 1962 structure and replaced it with the beautiful school we use today. In the spring of 2013, we celebrated our 50th anniversary with a community-wide celebration. THE LITTLE OLD SCHOOL HOUSE The little schoolhouse in front of the school was built in 1877 by Selim Vezina and Antoine Roy on the Vezina Ranch at Buffalo Park. Mrs. Caroline Riel Vezina, daughter-in-law of Selim, recognized its historical value. So when the family ranch was sold in 1948, she had the schoolhouse moved log by log and placed next to her home. She did this with the stipulation that she retain ownership until she could find someone to take it and guarantee its preservation. The Evergreen Woman’s Club requested this responsibility. Mrs. Vezina, herself a member of the Club for many years, enthusiastically agreed. In 1977, it was relocated to its current location in the circle drive at Wilmot Elementary. The Jefferson County School District maintains it to this day. OFFICE HOURS The office is open 8:00am to 4:00pm during the school year and 7:30am to 2:30pm in summer. SCHOOL HOURS Promptness is an important responsibility for students to learn. Our full-day school hours are 8:55am to 3:35pm. Half-day kindergarten dismisses at 11:30am.  The first bell rings at 8:45am, at which time students enter the building through the front door and proceed to their classrooms. Students should not arrive before 8:45am since student supervision is not available until that time.  The tardy bell rings at 8:55am. Students are expected to be in the classroom and ready to start the school day by 8:55am.  If a student arrives after 8:55am, parents must sign him/her in at the office before he/she is able to join his/her class.  Students should vacate the school building by 3:45pm (unless attending an after-school activity) as student supervision is not available after that time.  Students may not use the playgrounds after school without a parent/guardian present in the playground. SCHOOL CLOSURE If inclement weather or other occurrences require the school to be closed, families will typically receive voice and e-mail notifications by 5:00am through the School Messenger notification system. Local media outlets (television and radio) also broadcast our school closure. You can find any school closure notices on the District’s school closure page (link available on our website.) UPDATING STUDENT INFORMATION AND EMERGENCY INFORMATION It is the parent’s responsibility to keep their child’s contact and emergency information current. This information resides on Jeffco Connect (http://www.jeffcopublicschools.org/jeffco_connect/) and contains all the information for emergency care of your child. For your child’s safety, please update/review all contact and student information periodically during the school year. CHILD CUSTODY DOCUMENTS It is the parent’s responsibility to provide the school with the most current copy of child custody documents to be kept in the student’s cumulative file. Any natural parent, adoptive parent, or legal guardian has the right to review student records and communicate with school personnel concerning his/her child’s progress in school. To review records, be prepared to show identification.

STUDENT RECORDS / RELEASE OF STUDENT INFORMATION (excerpted from Code of Conduct)  The Executive Director of Exceptional Student Services is the custodian for special education student records while a student is active.  The Principal is the official custodian of academic records while a student is active at his or her school. Authorized school officials shall have rights to view, update or access the records to ensure that all records received or earned at his or her school are accurate and handled correctly according to Jefferson County policies and procedures.  The authorized officials at the Student Records Center are the custodian of archived permanent academic and special education records for all former students who have graduated or withdrawn from Jefferson County School District.  A parent or guardian shall be able to inspect and review the student’s education files. It is not necessary to have the parent/guardian complete a request form in order to examine their child’s records. However, the requestor must show their ID and have rights to the records. It may be necessary to require legal documents when releasing records to a non-custodial parent.  The original academic or special education records are the property of Jefferson County Schools and shall not be taken from the school building by the requestor. However, upon request, copies of the records or information may be released by the authorized official if a written request for the records has been received. ATTENDANCE Attendance is the responsibility of the student, the parents, and the school. The importance of regular, daily attendance as a basis for academic achievement cannot be overemphasized. {The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) and the Jefferson County School District have set a district-wide attendance goal for each school of 96%.} To help parents stay aware of their student's attendance record, the office will periodically send out courtesy notices to them if their student's attendance rate falls below 96% (either through tardies, absences, or early dismissal.) If the attendance problem is not resolved, a conference may be held and the services of the District Truant Officer may be requested. Of course, parents and legal guardians are always welcome to contact the office at any time to review and/or discuss their student's attendance record. We strongly urge parents to schedule all appointments (doctor, dentist, etc.) outside school hours so that the student’s attendance is not negatively impacted. Morning Attendance Procedures - Wilmot realizes the entire attendance procedure can only be successful with the cooperation of parents and families and we appreciate parents’ help in this important matter. Our Attendance Secretary is responsible to have every Wilmot student’s attendance completed by 10:15am every day. This includes accounting for all absences and tardies. For your reference, below is the timeline of how attendance happens at Wilmot every morning: 1 Parents should report their student’s absence/tardy to the school office and/or classroom teacher before 9:15am. When leaving an attendance message, please leave the following information: (1) student’s name and teacher, (3) your name and relationship to the student, and (3) reason for the absence or tardy. 2 We now offer several options to parents when reporting their student’s absence or tardy to the office:  Call the Attendance Line at 303.982.5367or the main office at 303.982.5370 to speak to staff or leave a message. Both voice mailboxes are checked often before 9:15am.  E-mail Jackie Weaver (Attendance Secretary) at [email protected]  Online Form - From the Wilmot website, click on the “Parents” tab/Attendance to access the online Google form to send us your information about your student’s absence or tardy. 3 Classroom teachers complete their classroom attendance at 8:55am. When completing their attendance, teachers simply mark whether students are “Present” or “Absent.” If parents have informed the teacher of their student’s absence/tardy already, the teacher can make note of that information when reporting attendance to the Attendance Secretary, which helps her code the absence as excused or unexcused. 4 By 9:30am, the Attendance Secretary retrieves all voicemail, e-mail and Google form attendance messages that parents have left for the office. 5 The Attendance Secretary then visits all classrooms of any unaccounted-for students to confirm that the student is not in school and to also check with teacher if he/she is aware of the reason for any absences/tardies. 6 By 10:15am, the Enrollment Secretary uses phone and e-mail to contact all parents and emergency contacts of any unaccounted-for students to verify the absence and to ensure the child’s safety. These phone and e-mail messages continue until contact is made with parent/guardian. If the Secretary cannot locate any child, she informs the Principal who then follows District guidelines to locate the child. 7 Finally, the Attendance Secretary uses the District Code of Conduct to code the absence/tardy as “Excused” or “Unexcused” (Link to Code of Conduct available on website under “Documents” tab.)

SPECIAL ATTENDANCE SCENARIOS o For late arrivals - Parents should escort their student to the office to sign him/her in. The student will then take a “Late Slip” from the desk to give to the classroom teacher. If your child will be arriving late, the office would greatly appreciate letting the office and/or classroom teacher know ahead of time. o For early departures – In order to maximize your child’s instructional time, he/she will be called out of class after the parent arrives in the office to sign him/her out. Please allow adequate time for your student to be called out of class. Please do not call the office requesting the student wait for you in the office. Pre-Arranged Absence Form – If your family is planning an absence in advance, you may turn in a “Pre-Arranged Absence Form” for approval of the absence. The Form is available on the school’s website under the “Parents” tab/Attendance or in the school office. 3

VISITS TO SCHOOL Parents are always welcome at Wilmot. Please contact the teacher either directly or through the school office before visiting so that scheduling conflicts may be avoided. Your visit will be more enjoyable if you are not accompanied by preschool-aged children. If you must bring younger siblings, please schedule your visit directly with the classroom teacher beforehand. Students are not allowed to have other children as visitors during the instructional day. If a student would like to show Wilmot to a friend, please call the office or a teacher to arrange a visit before or after school. When entering the building, it is necessary for all visitors to ring the front door buzzer for office staff to admit you through our Secure Entry. Once inside, visitors should proceed directly to the office to sign in and put on a Visitor Badge. Please be sure to (1) wear your visitor badge prominently during your visit and (2) return it to the office when you are signing out. DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP CAR LANE We all recognize that our drop-offs and pick-ups can be a source of frustration for families and staff alike, in part because so many vehicles are all moving within a small space. Below are Drop-Off and Pick-Up policies we have put in place so everyone has a clear understanding of expectations. These policies have been developed for the safety of all our students, staff and families. The guidelines below apply to the drop-off and pick-up times of 8:30am to 9:00am and 3:00pm to 3:45pm. o Please remember all adults are modeling appropriate behavior in front of the students. We all need to depend on each other to treat others with patience, respect and cooperation during drop-off and pick-up for the sake of everyone’s safety and sanity. o Staff will be positioned along the drop-off/pick-up lane to help direct drivers and students between 8:45am to 8:55am and 3:35pm to 3:45pm. o No cell phone use at any time during drop-off and pick-up times as you operate your vehicle. o Be especially aware that many younger children cannot be seen above higher-profile vehicles, so drive cautiously and slowly. o Parking along the curb is only allowable near the white split-rail fence up to the portable toilet. Beginning at the portable toilet and moving forward, parking is not allowed along the curb. o Pull as far forward as possible to the car in front of you and stay along the curb. o Traffic is to be single-file along the curb until exiting the parking lot at South Hatch Road. o After picking up your child, stay in line until you exit at South Hatch Drive. o Do not pull around any cars ahead of you. o Do not let your student(s) exit from the driver side. o PARENTS WHO NEED TO LEAVE THEIR VEHICLE MUST MOVE THEIR CAR TO A DESIGNATED PARKING SPACE. o Only cars with a disabled placard or disabled license plate may park in the handicapped parking spaces. o Drivers should never back up their vehicles in the school parking lot unless absolutely necessary. o Never leave your car unattended and/or running. o No parking in the bus loop before 9:15am and after 3:00pm. Only school busses and the EPRD vans are allowed in the circle during these times. o Parents are responsible to communicate these policies to all drivers in the family, including spouses, grandparents, guardians, and any others who drive for your family. Please refer to the map below for traffic patterns in our parking lot.

BUS INFORMATION We have several bus routes that serve our attendance area and our goal is that all bus riders arrive safely at their destination. Therefore, we ask every student who rides the bus and his/her parent to carefully read the bus contract, then discuss, sign, and return it to the bus driver. This contract covers riding buses at all times, including to and from school, special field trips, etc. The bus driver will give the bus contract to your child during the first week of school. If you have questions about bus route numbers or location of stops, you may contact West Area Transportation at 303.982.5215. Bus fees for the 2016-2017 year will be set during the summer 2015\6. (For the 2016-2017 year, bus fees were $150.) Bus fees can be paid all at once or by semester online after July 22 through Jeffco’s online payment system (access link from Jeffco Connect) or in the school office. A child is required to have a bus pass if he/she rides a different bus than his/her usual route or gets off at a different stop than is normal on the usual route. In these cases, parents should send a written note to the office indicating the change of plans. Office staff will then write out the bus pass and give it to the student to give to the afternoon bus driver. If your student needs a bus pass, please instruct him/her to turn in the parent note to the office at the start of the day to avoid unnecessary rush at dismissal time. RTD BUS The RTD Call-n-Ride service is available to transport students around Evergreen for a fee. However, this service has some limitations. When requesting a ride from RTD, parents should let the dispatcher know that students are not to arrive at Wilmot before 8:45am and should be picked up by 3:45 p.m. RTD is aware of our schedule and will make every effort to schedule rides accordingly. It is not possible for school staff to provide supervision for children before 8:45am or after 3:45pm; therefore, if RTD cannot accommodate the request, parents must make other arrangements. Contact RTD South Dispatch at 303.944.5777. BEFORE- AND AFTER-SCHOOL CARE Evergreen Parks and Recreation District (EPRD) operates our Before- and After-School program at Wilmot and Wulf Rec Center. For more information, contact Todd Sutton at 303.880.1218. EPRD also facilitates many of our After- and Before-School Enrichment programs at Wilmot. SCHOOL COMMUNICATION Most communications from school will be emailed, voice-mailed, or sent home with the students weekly in the Friday Folder. Teachers have webpages that are used extensively to keep parents aware of classroom happenings. In addition, Wilmot and Jeffco use a notification system called School Messenger to keep parents informed. Since School Messenger draws its parent contact information from Jeffco Connect, it is very important that your contact information is correct in Jeffco Connect (www.jeffcopuclicschools.org/jeffco_connect/) If you need to contact a staff member, please visit our website to find the Staff List at top for voicemail and e-mail information. Additionally, the PTA publishes their “Wilmot Wire” online newsletter monthly via email. Any other notices and reminders from the school or PTA will be sent on an as-needed basis. Contacting your child during the school day – We encourage parents to make all after-school social plans before school begins for the day and communicate transportation directions clearly to their student. Please realize that teachers and office staff may not be able to easily check voice mail during the school day. If parents call the office, office staff will make every attempt to relay your message, but due to on-site circumstances, may not be able to get your message to your student. Of course, parents should know that any emergency messages from parents/guardians will be given high priority and will be relayed to the student. CONFERENCES Parents are encouraged to attend fall and spring conferences because they provide valuable opportunities for the parent and teacher to work together to enhance the student’s school experience and performance. Parents are also encouraged to call their child’s teacher at any time during the school year if special needs arise. Conferences are scheduled through an online scheduler system which will be made available several weeks before conference dates. Teachers ask that parents arrive to their conference early so that they can stay on schedule and give each parent their allotted time.

LIBRARY The Wilmot Library is a resource and learning center for the entire Wilmot Community. Students, staff, and parents are all patrons of our library. The library houses a large collection of print and non-print materials, and includes the Wilmot broadcast and audio-video production room. Equipped with SMART Board technology, the library also has several computers that are used for the electronic catalog, as well as for research and word processing. Each Wilmot class visits the library weekly for instruction and checkout. The instruction might include lessons based on literacy skills, literature appreciation, research skills, in addition to classroom units of study integrated with technology. The library curriculum is based on state and national information literacy and education technology standards, and our teacher librarian collaborates with the classroom teachers on lesson planning. Small groups of students frequently use the library during the day for reading and writing activities. The library is adjacent to the computer lab and an effort is always made to connect technology with the use of the library materials. There is a two-week circulation limit for books and one week for magazines. Check-out guidelines are:  Kindergarten: one item at a time per week  1st grade: two items at a time per week  2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th grades: three items at a time per week Exceptions may be made regarding check-out guidelines for classroom assignments. Overdue and damaged book payments must be made before checkout privileges are reinstated. Any overdue, missing, or damaged book fines that remain at the end of the school year will be added to the student’s school fees for the following year. Parents are encouraged to use the collection of parenting resources in the library. Extra books may also be checked out by parents for special projects such as the Science Fair or curriculum projects involving research. The library hosts two Scholastic Book Fairs each year, and at those Fairs, families can purchase books at low prices with proceeds directly benefitting the library. TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION Wilmot is committed to a high quality technology education program that includes a computer lab, computers in every classroom, a computerized library and reference system, and SMART Board technology. Computers and Chromebooks are used by classrooms on a regular basis throughout the school year. Students learn 21st century technology skills in all grades. In order for your student to use the Internet during school hours, every parent and student must complete our Internet Permission Form as part of registration. SCHOOL CLINIC Our Clinic Para-Professional is Joni Thompson. She is certified by the American Red Cross in basic first aid and CPR. Ms. Thompson staffs our clinic and is delegated her job duties through our District Nurse. The Clinic is located in our main office. It is important that your contact information in Jeffco Connect is current so that we may reach you in the event of illness or accident. If your student is seriously ill or injured and we cannot reach you, we will seek appropriate medical assistance. All medications must be checked in to the clinic. Any special requests for a student to carry medication must be authorized by the student’s physician and approved by the District Nurse prior to the student carrying that medication. This must be re-authorized annually. Ms. Thompson is not permitted to dispense medications of any type (prescription or non-prescription) without written permission from a parent/guardian on a “924” form, available in the Clinic or on our website (click on the “Parent Info” tab, then click on Clinic and Health Services). Prescription drugs must be accompanied by the appropriate Medication Agreement Form signed by the doctor and in the original pharmacy container with the label specifying the child’s name, type of drug, dosage instructions, date dispensed, doctor’s name and pharmacy name with phone number. We are not permitted to administer a different dosage than what the prescription indicates. Nonprescription drugs must also be provided by the parent/guardian in the original container with directions clearly visible and labeled with child’s name. For any questions regarding Clinic procedures, please contact Ms. Thompson at 303.982.5370, [email protected].

STUDENT ATTIRE Wilmot has no formal dress code. However, parents are encouraged to help their student dress appropriately for school. Consideration should be given to the fact that school is your child's “place of business.” All children should dress in a manner that denotes good taste, takes into consideration rapid and severe weather changes, and does not distract from the learning of self or others. Since Wilmot Elementary has established a drug/tobacco/alcohol-free environment, wearing apparel which supports these substances is not acceptable. Rubber-soled shoes are required for P.E. classes and highly recommended for the playground. PERSONAL BELONGINGS Children should leave valuable personal belongings at home. If required/approved by the teacher, personal items brought in for a special event or demonstration should be marked clearly with the student’s name. The school does not assume responsibility for lost, stolen or damaged items. RECESS Students are expected to remain outside during recess time except in extreme weather conditions. Please send your child to school properly dressed for potential weather conditions. The general rule for Recess is that students will go outside if the temperature is above 20oF and weather is pleasant. Permission to go inside must be given by the ParaProfessional on duty on the playground. STUDENT USE OF SCHOOL TELEPHONES If a student needs to make a phone call, he/she should ask his/her teacher to use the classroom telephone at the appropriate time. We encourage parents to make all after-school social plans before school begins for the day. Students should not carry or use cell phones at school. CAFETERIA INFORMATION Lunch prices for the 2016-2017 school year (including beverage) per day for all elementary students is $2.75. A-la-carte items are available daily such as juice, fruit snacks, Gatorade and other items. A-la-carte is cash only; unless a parent provides a note stating a lunch account may be used Milk per carton price is $.50. Adult lunch prices without beverage, price $3.75. To add to or create your student’s lunch account, you may send in payment to the school office or go to www.mypaymentsplus.com. It is most efficient that payments be made early in the day. Please visit the Wilmot homepage, “Parent Info” tab (click on Lunch Menus and Food Services) for more information. When your student’s lunch account goes into a negative balance, he/she will receive a hand-stamp indicating “student needs lunch money.” Students whose balance drops below a balance of $-8.25 will be offered a District-mandated alternative lunch which consists of a carton of milk and four crackers. Lunch menus are posted on the Wilmot website at “Lunch Menus and Food Services” under the “Parent Info” tab. You may contact our Cafeteria Manager, Ann Hansen, at 303.982.5370. Free and Reduced Meal Program: Apply after July 1, 2015 for the 2015-2016 school year. You may apply online at https://lunchapps.jeffco.k12.co.us/ or in person in the school office. A new application for the Free & Reduced Meal Program is required each year starting after July 1. Contact the Financial Secretary for further information. ANIMALS POLICY Respecting that some students have allergies to dogs or other animals, and in the interest of overall health and safety, it is requested that families do not bring pets/animals into the school. SUPPLY LIST Student supply lists are available late spring on our website. We send these lists to local businesses in the Evergreen, Conifer, and Golden areas so they will have it available to their shoppers. The PTA also offers an easy option for parents to order their student’s school supplies for 2016-2017 before summer, with delivery at the Open House in August. Information regarding the PTA option will be available in early May 2016. BICYCLES Students are not encouraged to ride bicycles or scooters to school due to safety considerations. However, if the parent and child believe that the child is capable of riding to and from school safely and are willing to assume all risks, a child may ride his/her bike or scooter to school. The child is expected to walk the bike or scooter on school property. A bike rack for student use is available between the parking lot and traffic loop. The school assumes no responsibility for loss or damaged bikes or scooters. (See Jeffco Board Policy JLID)

FIELD TRIPS Parents will be notified about all field trips as they are planned during the course of the year. Signed permission slips must be returned prior to the trip. If the signed permission is not received, the student will remain at school with another teacher and with alternative assignments. Volunteer parent help is greatly appreciated and often necessary for field trips to occur. If the field trip has parent drivers transporting students, the driver will be required to submit license and insurance information to the school office before any child can travel in his/her vehicle. PTA and WILMOT COUNCIL Wilmot enjoys the involvement of parents in many ways, and it is through their generous support that we are able to provide extra classes, projects, activities, etc. The Wilmot PTA has been a leader in organizing volunteers and supporting special projects that support our school, such as:  Science Fair  Supporting funding for additional classroom materials  Reflections contest  Supporting funding for improved technological resources and  Bandana Day fall festival materials  Party Board promotion  Publishing the monthly PTA newsletter, The Wilmot Wire.  Funding “Artist in Residence” workshops  Spring Silent Auction The Wilmot Council is Wilmot's accountability committee and cooperative decision-making group. The Council is made up of parents, staff and community members. It is involved in setting the direction of the school and looking for ways to improve instruction. Meetings are open to all interested individuals. HOMEWORK In general, Wilmot has a policy of gradually increasing the amount of homework given as the students advance in school. Though free to make assignments as needed to achieve their own goals for their students, teachers are guided by the following: Grades 1, 2, 3 One to three assignments per week, taking no more than 15 minutes each Grades 4, 5 Two to four assignments per week, taking between 15 and 45 minutes each MAKEUP WORK POLICY Students who are absent from school for any reason will be expected to make up work missed in class. This work will be assigned after the student returns to school. Please do not request work to be taken on vacation. Work completed after an absence for sickness will be given full credit if completed in a timely fashion (two days for each day absent). Truancies and unexcused absences will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. If a child is absent due to an extended illness (three or more days), teachers will provide make-up work at the parent’s request. Please allow twenty-four hours for such a request to be completed. LOST AND FOUND Lost and Found is emptied on the last day of every month. The Lost and Found is located in the cafeteria, next to its entrance door, and in the front hallway. We ask that parents and students check Lost and Found frequently for any personal items left behind by your student. Any useable items that are left behind at the end of each month will be donated to local charity whenever possible. We also strongly suggest that parents label their student’s belongings so that any lost items can easily be identified. PARENT VOLUNTEERS Parent volunteers bring their excitement, ideas, time, and expertise to enhance the learning environment at Wilmot. We value and encourage the sharing of their skills, talent, and passion. Parent volunteers can be critical to the vital functioning of our school, including in the library, classroom, and office. Please check with your child's teacher, the PTA, or in the school office for ways in which you can share your time and talents. Please remember that parent volunteers must sign in at the office before proceeding to the classroom or other areas of the school building. PARTIES There are two school-wide party events: Halloween and Valentine’s Day. Classroom birthday parties are not encouraged as they take away from instructional time. If your child is hosting a party away from school and would like to invite classmates, parents are strongly encouraged to mail invitations rather than pass them out at school. If your child would like to celebrate his/her birthday or other special event at the school, a donation of a book to the Wilmot library in the child’s name is suggested. The librarian can provide suggestions and special bookplates.

PARTIES (continued) Please read the following important information about food and beverages in the school: FOOD AND BEVERAGES IN THE SCHOOL and HEALTHY SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT The Jefferson County Public School District recognizes that schools contribute to the basic health status of students and healthy students are better learners; therefore, the district promotes healthy schools through a coordinated approach that supports student wellness, good nutrition, regular physical activity and an environment that supports a culture of health and wellness as part of the total learning environment. Per District Policies ADF and ADF-R, Jefferson County School District will support and promote healthy dietary habits contributing to students' health and academic performance. Foods and beverages provided during the school day shall promote a school environment that encourages and models nutritious eating habits. Healthy food choices will be consistent with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Schools participating in the School Breakfast and/or National Lunch Program shall comply with related state and federal regulations established by the USDA: 2010 Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act and the USDA Smart Snacks Final Rule. Beginning in the 2014 school year, USDA’s Smart Snacks in School must be implemented. This rule requires that food and beverage items sold during the school day meet food and nutrition standards. The intent of the legislation is to increase the consumption of healthy foods during the school day and create an environment that reinforces the development of healthy eating habits. The Smart Snacks standards would not apply to: (1) items sold during nonschool hours, weekends or off-campus fundraising events; (2) foods brought from home for personal consumption; and/or (3) fundraiser foods not intended for consumption during the school day. The rule allows for special exemptions for the purposes of conducting infrequent, school-sponsored fundraisers. The rule also includes a mandate for state agencies to establish the number of allowable exempt fundraisers, which do not meet the food and nutrition standards. The Colorado Department of Education Office of School Nutrition will allow up to three exemptions per school building or school year. A product calculator can be found at the following link: https://www.healthiergeneration.org/take_action/schools/snacks_and_beverages/smart_snacks/alliance_product_calcu lator/ This calculator can be used to determine if snack foods meet the regulations. This calculator is not appropriate for beverages since Colorado has separate beverage regulations. PEPSI SPONSORSHIP The district has continued its sponsorship agreement with The Pepsi Bottling Group in Denver as the exclusive provider of our beverages such as juices, tea products, bottled water and sports drinks until 2014. Except for nonsponsored events (fee paying facility users), no competitive beverage products (e.g. Coca Cola, 7-UP Bottling or store brands), shall be sampled, sold, served or dispensed anywhere on district property. Neither shall competitive advertising, signage or trademark visibility be displayed.
