Stonington Public Schools Board of Education Meeting February 13, 2013 

Bids\Purchase  Tractor at SHS. I have tasked Ken Donovan with obtaining quotes and he has come back with 3 so far. It would require a transfer of funds within the CIP and I will request that we do that ASAP. We can transfer from the savings realized on the MMS gym ceiling painting project.  The fuel bid was opened on Jamuary24th. We did not award at that time and I have been monitoring the fuels markets since then. Unfortunately this cold snap has put the markets in a real bind and it will take some time before we see any deflated pricing.



Revenue/Advertising  Softball scoreboard. Five signed sponsors at this time. The softball field renovations are completed. The determination of the location for the new scoreboard is the right field side. I am still waiting on a letter from the Rec. Commission authorizing the split for the additional costs we will incur for proper installation.  I will meet with Larry Sullivan regarding a new idea I came up of placing the panels on the opposite sides of the scoreboard and therefore create less “wind-drag” for the signs. I should have an answer for this month’s regular BOE meeting on Thursday.



Food Service  Meal count remains constant for this year.  We are finalizing the food service conditions of employment contract for a 4 yr. agreement that will be brought to the BOE for your March regular meeting.  Free and reduced student enrollment is as at an all time high of 22% (up from 13% in 2007).  The food service staff is working to order food wisely and watching code dates carefully on milk products to minimize food waste during this challenging winter weather.



Transportation  The relocation of the bus depot in in process.  There are no wetlands on this Jerry Brown Road property but I am waiting for the report to state this fact.  Next steps are to authorize an A-2 survey of the property.  First Student needs to fuel at the Town Highway as the fuel tank at 50 Extrusion is “compromised”. I have requested a temporary fuel tank at 50 Extrusion. The first price seems exorbitant, but I don’t have any other numbers to base it on. I have put out other requests to companies.



Facilities/Security  The preliminary estimates for the baseball field to be brought back to the pristine and park-like conditions are around $45k. Paul Sartor as the fields committee chair is aware and will be asking for meetings to resolve this with bond monies. The BOE should not have to fund this as the field took its share of beatings for save the other grass fields. This will require a bid or bid waiver from the BOF.


