February 2014

PR E SI D E N T’ S L E TTE R Winter is half over and now is the time to get our flying skills back up to proficiency not just current. Get with your instructor for some recurrent training, biannual flight review, or instrument proficiency check ride. Many of us will be flying to the Bahamas in March, so let’s get all the little bugs fixed in our aircraft. For me it’s time to get the static system checked and while doing that replace the airspeed indicator that is acting up occasionally. For those flying to the Bahamas in March be sure to get your customs decal and your rafts rented. Captain Steve will guide us there and tell us all we need to know. As usual he has talked with Miami center and they are ready for us. If you are going to Club Med and have not been receiving Steve’s emails contact me, Stacy, or Steve and we will make sure you get this info. Thanks Steve for all the work you do for us with this trip!

There are some wonderful meetings scheduled this year with neat locations and great CE (Snowmass, Bahamas, Abilene, Williamsburg, Oshkosh, Stevensville, Bellingham, and Rough River). I want to encourage all our members to attend those meetings and especially those of you who for some reason are hesitant to attend, please come and let us welcome you into our FDA family. Hope to see you there! Give me a hug, handshakes are for sissies! Andy

February 2014

FLYING OSHKOSH FDA STYLE The heat is really being turned up for our Oshkosh extravaganza in July. Thank goodness because Iowa is in the middle of a deep freeze and one can only hope that summer is actually around the corner. We have some details firmed up for this trip of which I will highlight for your reading pleasure below. The whole week starts at beautiful Wausau, Wisconsin for a pre-party party on Saturday July 26th with our own Tom Turner, Jan Bublik, and Ned Markey at the controls. We will have a group BBQ complete with dancing girls (3 Markey’s, age 4 and under), rousing polka music and plenty of cheese curds for all. We then get a good nights sleep to get ready for our pre-flight briefing and launch for step two of our journey. We fly to Fond Du Lac (KFLD) Sunday morning, park, and get lined up for a release by OSH tower early Sunday afternoon for us to make a 9 mile flight ending on 36L and 36R while the tower closes the airport for 10 minutes just for us…the crowd at Oshkosh waits with baited breath for the Flying Dentists to arrive. Our group is then ushered to the North 40 where we will park for the next few days to start our adventure.

Tuesday evening we have a tent reserved just for us after the airshow and will have a catered supper from the best caterer in Oshkosh. Yep this one will be a hog roast done up right, compliments of the FDA. We will have plenty of beverages both soft drink and adult to rehydrate us after an indescribable day of aviation overload. After supper will be CE (TBD) before we get some shut-eye to do it all again tomorrow. We will stay at least through Wednesday and for those wanting to partake of arguably the best event at Oshkosh, the Wednesday night aerial show, a Thursday departure home is on tap. Many of us will want to camp under the wings of our steeds in true Oshkosh style but there are two options for those of us that want a bit softer bed. A Christian school turned dormitory is waiting for us. They can take 53 people and will house us complete with breakfast and a free shuttle that departs 2 times in the morning and leaves the airport to come back to the dorm 2 times in the late afternoon early evening. Supper is provided for a cost of $8 and the gymnasium is turned into a game room with ping pong, TV, card games etc. The whole place has good A/C just in case it gets good and hot in Wisconsin in July. Each classroom is turned into a bedroom that houses 10-12 people. They do have a women’s bathroom and can have a women’s only room depending on how many gals wish to partake. The cost for this is $59/night.

We have until March 1st to tell Stacy you want to stay here, otherwise the deposit has a bit of a penalty. The other option is The University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh where we get a true dormitory. There is a max of 2 per room and they have 10 rooms that have A/C and 30 rooms that do not have A/C at a cost of $120 and $70/room (not person) respectively. Breakfast and supper are provided and shuttle rides cost $1.50 per person one way so $3.00/day. We will have more people than each can hold

thus the two different choices. Each of these options has merit and at least get you off the ground. We have until March 1st to tell Stacy which option you choose. If you want on board, let Stacy know and please let me know so that I can tell OSH ATC who is coming. Check out this link to wet your whistle. http://www.eaavideo.org/ video.aspx?v=2680136529001 Sounds fun. No? Steve

February 2014

FLYING San Juan Yachting Adventure September 19-26, 2014 Fly your plane or fly commercially into Bellingham (KBLI) in northern Washington. A second option would be to fly commercially into Seattle and either ride the shuttle (a long ride) or rent a car and drive north. Since we are each chartering our own boats, no rental car will be necessary if you fly into Bellingham (the airport is only a few minutes cab ride to the harbor). So far, President Andy Kitchens gets the “Biggest Boat” award as he is signed up for a 47’ Bayliner!! We also have a 42’ Beneteau, a 40’ Catamaran, and a 37’ Back Cove; I have heard of a few more that are seriously looking at boats! There are at least 4 captains and 16 of their motley crews who are planning on attending including the Kitchens, Mowery, Kingston, Schell, Craddock, Stockhouse, Doyon, and Dread Pirate Markey. Night 1 – Friday, September 19th – Sailing School and Pre-Board – Bellingham, WA Night 2 – Saturday, September 20th - Arrive Spencer Spit State Park, Lopez Island Night 3 – Sunday, September 21st – Arrive Friday Harbor, San Juan Island Friday Harbor a special spot! It is a classic island town that has a lot to offer! One end of the main street begins at the Ferry Dock and continues up the hill and through the brightly painted shops, art galleries and restaurants. There are bicycle and scooter rental shops, ice cream shops, fresh fish for sale on the docks, t-shirt stores, a nice chandlery, a fantastic grocery store, hot showers, and several used book swap spots (a neat little island thing where you swap your old book for someone else’s!) Beavers, Turbine Otters, and 206’s abound! Watch them taking off and landing in the harbor. They are part of Kenmore Air’s commercial Fleet which offers Sea Plane service to many of the Islands. The Friday Harbor Airport is just up the hill if you don’t get your aviation fill in the harbor! Marvel at the yachts that have come in for the evening. Rent a kayak or launch your dingy and crab just a few yards outside the breakwater. There is a TON of FUN to be had here! And this is just what there is to do in the town, there is SO MUCH MORE on the island (more on that next month). We will plan on a group dinner and CE one of the two nights we are spend in the harbor. Book YOUR boat now! FLYING FDA Giving Back

ack B g vin i AG FD

The Arizona Dental Society Foundation hosted its second “Mission of Mercy” (MOM) at the Arizona fairgrounds in Phoenix on December 13-14, 2013. Utilizing 100 portable dental units and 1600 volunteers $1.4 million in free dental care was delivered to 2,020 patients - both children and adults. The emphasis was on basic dental care such as fillings, extractions, and cleanings. Limited lab work (ie stainless-steel crowns for children, treatment partials) were also offered. Organizing in Virginia and spreading throughout the United States, more than 70 MOM dental programs have been conducted since 200 to provide free dental care to local residents who otherwise were unable to receive such care. Mom events focus on: • Providing free access to dental care while placing a high priority on patients suffering from dental infections or pain.

Dr. Charles Wait, Marilou Zichittella, and Dr. Maria Mendes

• Raising public awareness of the increasing difficult low-income adults and children face in accessing critical dental care • Creating health care advocated via the hundreds of lay volunteers participating in the event Thank you, Dr. Charles Wait
