LIVOAD Volunteer Recovery Center (VRC) Fact Sheet The LIVOAD Volunteer Recovery Center (VRC) was created in response to Superstorm Sandy. The VRC was implemented to assist those Long Islanders who were most affected. It also supports volunteer engagement in every disaster phase.
The LIVOAD VRC located in a donated building/warehouse and the former headquarters of Sleepy’s in Bethpage, New York, secured by a board member of the Long Island Volunteer Center (LIVC). The LIVC converted the empty facility into a disaster relief center and opened the doors on December 12, 2012. Home base for LIVOAD, the VRC’s purpose was to support the LIVOAD (led by the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island) recovery and rebuilding efforts ensuring a coordinated response by disaster volunteer groups in affected communities across Long Island. The LIVC’s role was to provide logistical support for the volunteer groups and operation of the Volunteer Recovery Center and actively recruit volunteers for the disaster groups.
The VRC provided command centers for AmeriCorps St. Louis ERT, NCCC teams from across the country, FEMA, FEMA Corps, Nechama (Jewish Response to Disaster), Project Hope, Stroke Life Society, Pet Safe Coalition, American Red Cross, Health & Welfare Council of Long Island, and United Way of Long Island. AmeriCorps St. Louis ERT trained and equipped teams for “muck-outs”, debris removal, and mold suppression. Each team required a leader and approximately 7-10 volunteers. They also set up and staffed a call center for homeowners and volunteers.
Some of the LIVOAD organizations utilizing the warehouse included Southern Baptists, Stroke Life Society, FEGS, United Way of Long Island, UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief), FEMA, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Nechama, Long Island Cares-The Harry Chapin Food Bank, and Convoy of Hope. Transportation was donated by AmeriCorps, St. Vincent de Paul, Southern Baptists, Stroke Life Society, and On-Time Trucking.
Trainings to support disaster relief and recovery included health & safety, Be Red Cross Ready, volunteer management & construction management, case management, unmet needs roundtable, Coordinated Access Network, FEMA sponsored Church World Services Disaster Tool & Techniques, mold abatement, corporate disaster volunteering.
LIVOAD meetings are also conducted at the VRC including Long Term Recovery Group (Executive and full committee), Health & Safety, Case Management, Housing, Volunteer Management, Construction Management, Donations Management, Muck-Out, Emotional/Spiritual Care, and Communications.
The LIVOAD VRC closed on August 15, 2013 when the building was leased. Efforts are underway to replicate full operation. Temporary offices have been established at NC OEM and AmeriCorps Command Center. Temporary warehousing was donated by a local development company at Pilgrim State.
To date, 36,939 volunteers have served 336,477 volunteer hours in disaster relief efforts accomplished by over 90 health and human service agencies, disaster groups and community organizations. Revised 12/6/13

“I wanted to thank you again from the bottom of my heart for the amazing job you and your students have performed at my home in ...demolishing my large wooden deck and 3 tools sheds damaged by Superstorm Sandy.” “...I will forever remember the kindness you as a group have shown me when I was at my lowest. I am profoundly grateful for the help and humbled to have met you and this fantastic group of young adults. I sincerely hope to “pay forward” the help you have given me.” “Good luck to all of your wonderful students. Extend them my deepest thanks and warm wishes for success in everything that lies ahead of them.” “Thank you and God bless you all. Keep up your good work.” - LI Homeowner
