From the Fleet Captain Gary Kunz Dear Fleet Members, This last month "I did it!" Well I did several things for the first time. First of all I served aboard the Race Committee Boat. Tim Morris provided his Santana 35, Envoy for committee duty and several of us went aboard to help out. Honestly though, Tim, Susan, and the PRO had things so well organized that the entire event ran like clock work. Thank you Tim and Susan for allowing me to be a part of your race committee crew. During the evening I learned about conducting our races plus I learned that Tim and I attended high school together. Tim was a year behind me so that accounts for his youthful appearance. I also did the Baja Bash with Fleet Member Fred Hazzard aboard his C&C 44, Fury. Coming up the Baja coast with Fred and the crew was 1,000 miles of fun and learning from the best. Yes, we tacked all the way, but it was a pleasant journey never the less. With a four man crew it seemed like each person was eager to bring to bear the special skills each possessed adding to the overall experience. To me this was team work at its best, and we each learned from one another. The other guys were experienced sailors and I'm just thankful they didn't tire of my constant questions about sail trim and tactics. During the trip I got some engine grime under my finger nails and a lot of sailing under my belt. It was a great opportunity and only made possible through my affiliation with the Cal 20 Fleet.

During August we will have our traditional cruise and camp out at Government Island. Be watching for information coming about this event. Also coming up is the ever popular Mentor Night, so be on the lookout for time and date. The Golf Tournament for this year has been cancelled. Interest seemed to wane in recent years and with everyone so busy we decided to pull this event out of the mix. Summer is full and we need to add to your enjoyment not just make your calendar more full. From a planning perspective it is getting late in the year, but I did want to check with Fleet members to see if there is interest in a road trip and camp out with the boats. So right now I'm only gathering information. The first I'd like to gather is a list of who has a trailer that is safe/legal/capable of travel on the highway? Second, is who 'might' be interested in going somewhere with the boats on a weekend? For instance I was down at Detroit Lake with my boat three years ago and they were having a big sailboat race. The fleet was mixed, but there were a lot of boats involved. If there is some interest in this sort of event I'll explore it and report in a future news letter. See you on the water, Gary M. Kunz Fleet Captain

Should be a kick, more info to come. Following that, don’t miss Tim Morris’ boat repair workshop, hopefully the first to many to follow. Tim really knows his way around boat repair, what a great opportunity to get advice for our own repairs - all of our boats need something fixed. Next, please plan to attend the annual campout. Cindi Hamann is planning it with a luhau theme. We’ll even have bocci ball. A get away for a weekend and get to know fleet members. Cal 20 Fleet 8 Update There is a growing fleet of Cal 20’s at the Tacoma Yacht Club! Fleet Captain Jon Thompson sent in this update: Fleet 8 is in its 3rd year and is now up to 11 boats. We continue to bring boats up from So Cal as new people become interested. Fleet 8 and Fleet 38 Vancouver are preparing to assist Bellingham Yacht Club in hosting the Northwest’s first Cal 20 District Championships on Bellingham Bay on August 29-31. Fleet 8 is beginning to

attract more seasoned sailors as interest grows. We are also planning to start racing some regattas with kites and to race PHRF. I think we should try to eliminate the disconnect between the Northwest fleets, perhaps a yearly international event with Canada, Portland, and Tacoma where we arrange loaner boats for those travelling. Thanks, Jon Thompson, Fleet 8 Captain, Cal 20 #999

Membership Update Dennis Damore As far as my records show, we have set a record this year with 84 members. Whoohoo! Plus, this is the first year in memory that every member from last year with one exception (excluding those who have sold boats, moved, etc.) have gotten their membership into the system by the first of June. I attribute that to the hard work of Kerry Cakebread and Doug Frengle who sorted out the QuickBooks system so that we can invoice members monthly for moorage and for their annual membership fee. Nice work Kerry and Doug, and thanks to all the members for getting current. It keeps our records clean and our email list current. We’d like to welcome Tom Pfeiffer

to our fleet as the new boat owner of River Rose, which he bought from Michell Bennett. Tom got in touch with me through our membership email and after some chats about the particulars of the fleet he signed up, and then promptly bought Michelle’s boat rather than one he had been looking at in San Francisco. If you are walking the docks and see him on RR, stop by and welcome him to the fleet. I think he may be racing soon (crew, maybe?). See you on the river. If you have any questions about membership please do not hesitate to give Denny Damore a call at 503-318-6295 or send him an email at [email protected] July 2014 - page 4

Ripples Dennis Damore Since I’m the “membership guy”, this note is mostly for new members/new Columbia River sailors although it can also apply to old salts - just ask Fred Hazzard. The title comes from the fact that the other day Benny Quintanilla and Maxine Damore, along with a friend Britney and another Cal 20 sailor, newbie Lloyd Weema, were having a good old time sailing on a sunny, windy Saturday afternoon when Benny saw a row of ripples ahead of his boat, Maximo. They were way above the 42nd St. ramp on the Oregon shore with clear sailing ahead, and when Benny checked his depth gauge it showed about a dozen feet of water so the ripples ahead were confusing at best. Well, within seconds, there was that stomach-turning BAM! With the boat pitching forward about 25° and stopping dead in the water. Then the boat did a kind of pirouette on its own and Benny turned to sail back into the center of the river. Everyone was shocked. No one was hurt. The boat seemed fine. But everyone had no idea what they hit or what really happened. Benny and Max have been sailing on Maximo for about 3 years. Britney is here for the summer from Michigan. Lloyd is just learning to sail. No significant local

knowledge in the bunch. When he got home, we discussed a whole range of topics related to WING DAMS and RIPPLES. With the water still high, the former will cause the latter and will cause you trouble if you hit them. Plus, as these wing dams get older and older with no maintenance for many years and none in the foreseeable future, safety signals like dolphins at the end of the row get torn away by the current, and so the only signal you have are the ripples. Get out of there and ask the old gray beards before you go sailing where the wing dams are here locally that can get you into trouble. Many of them are not even marked on the charts. Maximo still had a great day, and they learned a valuable lesson. The next encounter might not have such a happy ending. Have fun, but pay attention and take the time to learn about the water you sail in before you hoist those sails. See you on the river, Denny For more info on the lower Columbia wing dams, see this: http://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/Missions/ Navigation/Piledikes.aspx
