[email protected] CLEAN UP AND GUTTING INSTRUCTIONS Sort items into “Toss” and “Save” piles o Many items can be cleaned and salvaged. Don’t assume just because it’s wet it has to go. Clothes can be wash with detergent and pine sol, solid wood furniture can be cleaned and dried if it’s not warped, etc. Move “Toss” items to the curb (see instructions below) Box or package “Save” items and move to dry, secure location If less than 3’ of water in the house o Make sure all power is shut off at breakers o Remove base cabinets in kitchen and baths to enable drywall removal behind them o Measure 4’ up from floor at corners o Snap a chalk line to mark o Cut drywall along that line (make sure all power is shut off at breakers) o Make a whole with a hammer or other and break drywall off to the cut line o Pull all insulation out, even what’s above the 4’ cut line If more than 4’ of water in the house o Make sure all power is shut off at breakers o Remove cabinets in kitchen and baths to enable drywall removal behind them o Make a whole with a hammer or other and break drywall o Remove drywall o Pull all insulation out

FEMA OFFICIALS SUGGEST YOU SEPARATE DEBRIS INTO SIX CATEGORIES: 1. Food, packaging and household waste 2. Construction debris like drywall and furniture 3. Vegetation like brush and tree branches in the third 4. Appliances like refrigerators and water heaters go in another pile and appliance doors should be secured with duct tape. 5. Hazardous materials like, paint and cleaning supplies in the fifth pile. 6. Electronics like computers and televisions should be in the last bunch. FEMA also recommends combining debris piles with your neighbors to speed up collection.
