Food Safety Council Poster Contest for Students

“Serving Safe Food” February 2018 The Vineland Food Safety Council and the Vineland Health Department are holding a contest amongst all school-age children in the City of Vineland (1st through 12th grades) to design a poster on the importance of providing safe food. Winning posters will be featured in our 2019 Food Safety Calendar. Calendars will be given to over 400 retail food establishments throughout the City. It is our goal to have one poster from each grade chosen for the 2019 calendar. The posters will be judged by the Vineland Food Safety Council and Vineland Health Department. The 12 winners will each receive a $50 Visa Gift card and more. Each of the winners will receive 3 copies of the calendar. CONTEST RULES: Themes for the poster contest will be as follows: (please include all aspects mentioned) • 1st through 5th grades: The importance of handwashing when handling food • 6th grade: Minimum cooking temperature requirements for different foods. How do you know you have reached that temperature? Why is this important? • 7th Grade: Food temperature requirements for hot and cold holding- What temperatures? Why are holding temperatures important to food safety? th • 8 grade Cooling potentially hazardous foods and why these are important to food safety. Mention methods, temperatures and times. • 9th through 12th grades: Specific foodborne illnesses: Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria, Rat lung disease, Norovirus, Clostridium botulinum, Scromboid poisoning or E. coli. The poster must mention only one of these specific illnesses and contain at least one control point and information on that illness such as source, symptoms and cause. Creativity is highly encouraged. Posters should inspire foodhandlers to protect our food and keep us all healthy! They must be colorful and should have words to help express the message of the drawing. The posters need to be an original idea and must be accurate. Deadline: March 23, 2018 Return posters to: Vineland Health Dept. (City Hall- 4th Floor- 640 E. Wood St., Vineland, NJ) Call 794-4131 for pick-up, if needed. Size Requirement: 8” x 11.5” (landscape orientation) only with student’s name, grade, school, and age on the back Notification of winners: April 10, 2018 (through school) Parents/legal guardians will be asked if we can print the name of the student on the calendar with their winning posters. (If they choose to have their child’s poster be anonymous, that will not affect the contest.) All posters will be displayed in various places throughout the city for at least 2 weeks. Our contest is a wonderful way for our children to have an effect on everyone’s health and the future. We are excited to see what young minds can create!
