SEAMEO RECFON Regional Course on Food Safety for Nutritionist and Other Health Professionals SEAMEO RECFON conducted the 22th Food Safety course as part of the Master Program in Community Nutrition Program Study of Nutrition Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia in Jakarta on 13th –27th April, 2015. It was attended by 14 Master students, 1 doctorate student of Universitas Indonesia, 4 short courses and 4 regional participants. Nine (9) master students from Institute of Nutrition Mahidol University (INMU) were also join the course as follow up of the agreement between SEAMEO RECFON and INMU. A total of 31 participants of nutritionists, health professional, academe and policy makers from Lao PDR, Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia attended the course. Topic on Risk Assessment was given as additional to SEAMEO RECFON/WHO Module on Food Safety for Nutritionist and Other Health Professionals used on the course. Various experts delivered respected topics such as Dr.Anis Kurniawati (Faculty of Medicine, UI), Halim Nababan MBA (National Agency for Food Drug Control), Rina Agustina, MD, MSc, PhD (Faculty Medicine UI/SEAMEO RECFON), Ahmad Wahyudi (Nutricia), Prof. Fransisca Zakaria PhD and Prof. Dr. Dedy Fardiaz (Bogor Agriculture University) as well as DR. Dwi Nastiti Iswarawanti MSc and Evi Ermayani MSc (from SEAMEO RECFON). Various exercise were practices to aim the objectives of the course. Incident Summary exercise was assigned to participants in order to give them understanding on foodborne disease surveillance. The HACCP exercise was designed to help participants understand what information was required to do HACCP and how to use it. A Field visit to beverage industries factories of Frisian Flag Indonesia and Carrefour or Trans Retail Indonesia were done to give exposure participants about the implementation of hygiene and HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point). The next day the students are presented the result of the visit. Risk assessment exercise aimed to give participants ability to identify food safety hazards, to assess the exposure and characterized the risk. By the end of the course, the participants appreciated the opportunities and gained valuable experiences and skills. An exercise on food safety education project planning was asigned so that participants able to develop a health education program to improve food safety in community.

EXCELLENCE IN FOOD AND NUTRITION FOR QUALITY HUMAN RESOURCES

Seminar on Food Safety and Food Security Facing the ASEAN Economic Community 2015 FAO defined Food Security as condition when all people , all times have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food which meets their dietary needs for active healthy lifestyle. A Seminar entitled “Optimizing Self Sufficiency on Food Facing the ASEAN Economic Community 2015” was organized by Perhimpunan Ahli Teknologi Pangan Indonesia (PATPI) Sulawesi Utara, Indonesia in collaboration with SEAMEO RECFON in Manado on 17th November, 2014. This seminar aimed to improve the awareness of respected stakeholder in order to obtain sustainable and self sufficient nutrition and food security facing the ASEAN Economic Community. There was 145 participants who are come from universities as well as food and nutrition institutions related. Researches on food and nutrition were also disseminated during this event.

Food Safety and HACCP Course for Nutritionits working in hospitals in Tasikmalaya Hospitals were obligated to have a Prevention and Control of Infection (PCI) program including food borne illness. Nutritionist who working at hospitals and food services should have capability to control and ensure the safety of food they produced. SEAMEO RECFON in collaboration with Poltekkes Kemenkes (Health Polytechnic of Misnistry of Health) Tasikmalaya conducted a course aiming to equip the nutritionists of the mentioning skills. DR. Dwi Nastiti Iswarawanti MSc from SEAMEO RECFON and Tri K. Agung Puruhita SKM MKM (trainer of SEAMEO RECFON Food Safety training) from Poltekkes Kemenkes Tasikmalaya facilitated the 3-day course which conducted in Tasikmalaya on 4th -6th December 2014. There were 21 participants attended the course. A visit to banana chips food industry was done to give opportunity for participants to learn about implementation of Good Hygiene Practices and Principles of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points.

Food Safety course in School of Public Health-National Institute of Public Health (SPH-NIPH) Cambodia As part of capacity building activity of SEAMEO RECFON for the SPH-NIPH Ministry of Health Cambodia, a 3-day Food Safety course was conducted for Master student in Nutrition in Phnom Penh on 18-20 October 2014. DR. Dwi Nastiti Iswarawanti MSc and Drupadi Dillon MSc PhD from SEAMEO RECFON delivered the topics using part of SEAMEO RECFON/WHO Module Food Safety for nutritionists. There was 26 participants attended the course aimed to obtain knowledge on basic food microbiology, food-borne pathogen, chemical hazards on foods, impact of food safety to nutritional status, Good Hygienic Practices (GHP) dan Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP). Exercise to observe street vendors practices was given in order to expose the students on food safety local problems. By the end of the course the students understand and able to identify food hazards and prevent foodborne illness.

Food Safety course for Health staffs in Lao PDR In collaboration with Department Food and Drug Administration, Ministry of Health Lao PDR, SEAMEO RECFON conducted a 3-day Food Safety course for nutritionists and health staffs in Vientianne on 22th24th December 2014. DR. Dwi Nastiti Iswarawanti MSc, Viengxay Vansilalom and Sivilay Naphayvong , (trainers of SEAMEO RECFON Food Safety training) and some local speakers such as from Food and Drug Quality Control Department MoH Lao PDR, Food and Drug Inspection Department MoH Lao PDR, National Center for Laboratory and Epidemiology, OK Drinking Water company and Danone Thailand. Presentations on Risk assessment study on pesticide and aflatoxin in Lao PDR and Current Food Safety Problems were presented to update food safety problems and programs in Lao PDR. Observation to street food practices was done to give experience the participants on local problems.
