Helping Your Child Parents and carers often ask how they can help their child progress better and achieve more in school. In order to give you some help we have now published a number of items on our web site to assist with any work you might do at home with your child.

Curriculum Maps Sometimes it can be difficult to find out from your child what they have been doing in school! By referring to the curriculum map for their year group you can soon find out the main areas of study for your child each term.

Maths Target Guides These guides give an idea of what an ‘average’ child should be able to do by the end of their current academic year. Of course some children will have made better than average progress and some will have progressed less well. The guides also give a few examples of the type of problems and calculations that you could practice with your child. There are three guides for each year group with different examples in each.

Homework Our homework policy can be found on the school web site. Parents can help by ensuring that: Children are provided with a quiet place, free from distraction (not in front of the television!) where they can read, practice their spellings and tables and undertake research and study including access to the internet.* A supply of pens, pencils, coloured pencils and paper should be made available. When children are learning to read, support from a family member will be needed. When reading unaided, parents can support by providing different examples of reading material and discussing the content of the reading material. Adult help is invaluable when it comes to practising spellings and times tables. Use of the Internet and the World Wide Web Children need to be kept safe when browsing the internet. Advice on internet safety can be found (see document E – Safety Advice) on the school web site in the information section. *If access to a computer and the internet is a problem please contact the school for advice.

The school has invested in two web hosted practice and revision sites for which all children have log on details. Mathletics is our newest site and children have enjoyed completing maths exercises both at home and at school. Practice and revision exercises in other areas of the curriculum are also available on I Am Learning .

Friends of Freeman’s School FOFS

Reply Slip FOFS Committee

For some time now the Friends of Freeman’s School have struggled to sustain a committee large enough to enable it to work effectively. At the recent FOFS meeting 4th October 2011 to launch activities for this year, unfortunately, no one turned up.

Over the years FOFS have provided for the children of the school in many ways including most recently the new playground equipment, the two outside classrooms, a piano, subsidised coach costs to the pantomime, bookmarks and ice creams to name but a few. Unless more parents and friends of the school are prepared to join the committee then many of our regular FOFS sponsored events such as school discos, film nights, fairs and trips would have to cease. If you feel able to give up some of your time to reinvigorate the FOFS committee please complete the slip and return it to the school as soon as possible.

Hot Meals

A few reminders: st

Pupils return to school on Tuesday the 1 of November. Pupils will now need to wear full school uniform and not summer uniform. All pupils need to wear shirts with a collar and school tie. No polo shirts or blouses please. Please ensure that all school uniform is clearly labelled, this enables us to return any lost items back to the pupil. Now that our Year 3 and other new pupils have settled in may I remind parents not to wait on the playground when dropping off in the morning. Pupils (other than those coming to breakfast club or other morning clubs) should not be on the playground before 8:45 as we cannot guarantee supervision before this time. We have some vacancies in our woodwind classes. If you are interested in your child having woodwind tuition please contact the school office for further details.

We do hope your children are enjoying the hot meal scheme, it has proved to be very popular. Can we remind you that orders and payments are required 1 week in advance. Orders should be received into the office by 9.30am on a Monday morning. Thank you.
