[email protected] Abstract The NSF “Looking Beyond the Internet” planning group led by Chip Elliott, Dave Farber and Larry Landweber is conducting a series of workshops intended to discuss new research opportunities in the broad areas of future wireless, networks and clouds. The goal is to engage the research community to identify potentially transformative network architectures, enabling technologies and applications in three broad categories: softwaredefined infrastructure and exchanges (SDI/SDX), city-scale wireless networks and future applications and services. This workshop will focus on “future wireless cities”, a topic which has generated considerable community interest in earlier forums such as the NSF meeting on Future Research Infrastructure for the Wireless Edge in November 2014 and the NTIA’s initiative on “spectrum model cities”. A future wireless city is envisioned as a dense deployment of programmable /heterogeneous wireless access technologies backed up by software-defined infrastructure networks, novel network architectures and edge-cloud services. While the above objectives are being addressed to some extent in industry and standards forums such as “5G”, “IMT-2020” and “MEC”, we believe that rapidly changing core technologies (such as SDR, SDN, virtualization, cloud) have created the right conditions for disruptive breakthroughs in the design of future wireless systems. The “wireless city” is viewed as an “in-situ” testbed that provides sufficient density, scale and realism to explore and validate new concepts. The scope of the workshop will include ideas for future wireless network architecture, key technologies and algorithms, testbed realization, cloud service integration, and application concepts/use cases. Topics of interest include: - High-level “wireless cities” goals, requirements and architecture - Next-generation wireless/mobile network architecture and service concepts

As a pre-requisite for Workshop attendance, contributions are solicited from prospective participants in the form of one-page white papers identifying new research directions and related testbed infrastructure requirements. Those accepted for the Workshop will be notified by Dec. 1,2015 VENUE / DATE Washington DC, Date: February 2-3, 2016 FUNDING Limited funds are available for travel and local expenses of attendees.
