Terms and Conditions - 2017 1) CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICY: A direct debit for any tariff can be cancelled at any time and a full refund for any membership package will be issued provided it is requested in writing to club Director, Tony Koutsoumbos, within 30 days of procuring the membership package. Refunds will be issued by electronic transfer only. Training workshops and resources purchased individually are non-refundable. 2) Members bank details are held exclusively by payment processing platform GOCARDLESS and cannot be viewed or accessed by anyone other than the member themselves and GOCARDLESS. The Great Debaters Club does not, therefore, bear any responsibility for any errors or incidents relating to the payment of direct debits and one-off payments or the security of members’ bank details. 3) Guaranteed speaking opportunities in public debates entitles members to a minimum of two speaking opportunities during the 12 months of their membership. Members can access these opportunities by volunteering at any time in person or remotely. The club’s Director retains the right to deny a speaking opportunity in any given debate provided a valid explanation is given and future opportunities are made available within the 12-month membership period to realise the member’s entitlement in full. 4) Membership does not guarantee admission into all training and practice workshops and is contingent on members booking their place before maximum capacity is reached. However, exceptions can be made for members who are unable to register due to technical problems or for members registering for their first workshop, in the event of which members who have already attended the workshop before or non-members who have signed up to attend will be removed and offered another date. 5) The club retains the right to reschedule individual debates and workshops, but must give members at least 5 calendar days’ notice of any change. If this is not possible, should a venue cancel at short notice for example, then an explanation for the change must be given at the earliest possible opportunity. 6) Student concessions apply to both full-time undergraduate and post-graduate students. A recent graduate must have graduated within the last 3 months to access this concession rate. 7) The concession rate available to unemployed members refers to those in receipt of Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income Support, Housing Benefit, or the Universal Credit. It does not apply to members in receipt of a state pension or to members who are self-employed or not in receipt of state benefits. 8) Written training materials are protected under UK copyright law and members are expressly forbidden from producing and/or distributing copies of all and any training guides (including workshop notes) without the express permission of the club’s founder and proprietor, Tony Koutsoumbos. 9) Members are required to act in accordance with the club’s code of conduct (see p.13) at all times when interacting with other members at club events and workshops or on the club’s online platforms. Violation of this code will, if all prior attempts to resolve the dispute fail, result in expulsion from the club and termination of membership without refund. The club is not responsible for the behaviour of members towards each other at all other times. 1
Code of conduct 1) Members shall refrain from interrupting or heckling one another when speaking in debates, training exercises, or class discussions. 2) Members will make every effort to communicate with one another in a civil and respectful tone and refrain from personal attacks or the use of abusive language. 3) Members shall not knowingly, recklessly, or maliciously injure the reputation of other members, the club, or the club’s Director and trainers. This includes: spreading rumours, making false accusations, and distorting the truth by inventing falsities or omitting key facts with the intention of negatively portraying the behaviour or character of the club’s members, Director, or trainers. 4) Members representing the club at official functions shall not conduct themselves in any way that threatens to disrupt the club’s activities, harm the welfare of other members, or bring the club into disrepute or damage its relationship with other partner organisations. This includes: the consumption of excess alcohol, the use of vulgar or offensive language, or the refusal to take part in scheduled activities without good reason (such as improper behaviour by another member) or sufficient notice, so as to allow a replacement to be found by the club. 5) Members shall respect the personal space of other members and be conscious of the impact of their actions on others of a more sensitive disposition. Any members who feel they have been a victim of harassment, victimisation, or gross misconduct, as defined by the Equality Act, should report their concerns to the club’s Director immediately. 6) The debate chamber and training room are a safe space to disagree governed by Chatham House rules, which ensures members have the right to express themselves freely and defend positions they do not themselves hold without fear of another member recording them or using their remarks to injure their reputation in any way. 7) Members shall not use club events, training workshops, or online platforms to make unsolicited advances to other members for commercial, personal, or any other purposes either in person or through any other channels. 8) The club director and any trainers appointed by them shall refrain from practices that discriminate against members or violate their personal space. Any members who feel the club’s Director or trainers have behaved inappropriately towards them may request a fellow member to report their concerns to the club’s Director on condition of anonymity and request an investigation.
