The Bears had their biggest offensive output of the season so far, and got another solid performance from emerging ace Bailey Martin, as Bryan rolled to an 11-1 victory that was called in the sixth inning due to the mercy rule. Bryan improved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the NWOAL with the win. Evergreen dropped to 1-6, 0-3.

“We said it was a business-like approach. We can’t take anybody lightly, because we haven’t proven anything yet,” Bryan head coach Jeff Inselmann said. “Baseball is fun to play, especially when you start driving the baseball a little bit. Our hitters are getting really close and we’re excited.
“That’s something we preach is to play fast. We want to get off to a good start and put them away early. If you let teams hang around, anything can happen. We’ve learned the hard way from that standpoint,” the Bryan coach continued. “So going forward, hopefully we can get off to good starts like this. It just propels us and gives us more energy.” Nyse ETF 0.16 Nasd_ETFs 0.30 TTIx S&P 500 ETFs Index

Of course, it makes the game much more enjoyable when you hit the ball, pitch, and play defense as well as the Golden Bears did in their Northwest Ohio Athletic League matchup with the Vikings.

different Bears had at least one hit in the game, as Bryan had its best game of the season in terms of driving in runners on base. Jordan Bostater had a productive day from the No. 3 spot in the order, going 2 for 3 with a triple, single and an RBI. Thomas Martin went 2 for 3 with two singles, including one where he came all the way around to score after the Evergreen right fielder misplayed the ball for a three-base error. Thomas Martin also scored two runs, had an RBI, and a stolen base from his ninth spot in the order. But that was far from all for the Bears. Sophomore Chris Wittler, in his first varsity start, hit a double off the left-center wall just inches from being a home run, and also reached base on a hit by pitch. Derek Knisely had two singles and an RBI; and Conner Terrell, Kyle Rupp, and Ethan Retcher each had a single and an RBI for Bryan. “It was good to see us driving gaps,” Inselmann said. “We only had three extra-base hits coming into tonight ... Chris Wittler, it’s his first varsity start. We preach competition and he’s been getting it done on the (junior varsity) level. It was good to see him have a couple good shots.” Evergreen went with Jake Willeman to start on the mound, and he was roughed up for eight runs (four earned) on seven hits over 2 1/3 innings. “It kind of surprised us because we thought we’d see the Dowling kid,” Inselmann said. “But the secret is out that we struggle with off-speed and guys that aren’t power pitchers, but I thought for the most part we battled and did a pretty good job and had good swings.” Although the pitching took somewhat of a backseat to the offense on this day, Bailey Martin improved to 2-0 on the mound, going five innings and allowing just one earned run on two base hits with five strikeouts and two walks. The right-hander had a no-hitter going until Evergreen finally got a single from Alex Sullivan with one out in the fifth inning. The Vikings would score their only run of the game later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Nick Etue. “We came out swinging the bat hard. Bailey gave us a solid performance on the hill as he has done all season. Our bats just came alive,” Miley said. “I think this was one of our breakout games.” Bryan is back in action on Saturday in a non-league doubleheader at Oregon Clay. The Bears will then host Delta on Monday in an NWOAL game. Bryan still controls its own destiny in terms of the league championship, as the Bears are yet to play Wauseon and Patrick Henry, the only two teams left in the league without a loss. “We control our own destiny. Our guys know that,” Inselmann said. “It’s cliche, but we’ve got to take it one game at a time. We’re fortunate we’ve got Delta here on Monday league-wise. It’s good to have home games in the league. “Hopefully we can just keep the ball rolling. Bailey (Martin) will be on the hill.”
