Wellesley Career Education Grant Stipend Allocation

INTRODUCTION In an ongoing effort to expand access to our internship awards, Wellesley Career Education adjusted our award amounts toward sponsoring unpaid, summer internships. These stipends are designed to support essential living expenses, such as housing, transportation, and food. After evaluation of student selfreported budgets, cost-of-living discrepancies, and variations in financial need, we restructured the award amounts so that most students will receive about $4,000 of support. Moreover, many of our students receive internship awards more than once during their time at Wellesley. Notably, we find this amount to be either comparable or more generous than most institutions that offer similar support for unpaid internships; we will revisit these allocations every few years to ensure that the awards allow students of all interests and backgrounds to pursue a variety of internship experiences. AWARD ALLOCATION STRUCTURE The award amounts will be determined as follows: • Base Award Amount: $2,500 • Housing Allowance: $1,500. If a program does not provide housing, the housing allowance will be applied. Students who live at home during their internship will not be eligible for the housing allowance. • Financial Need Supplement: up to $1,000. This need-based formula will be determined by the following factors: o degree to which a student receives financial aid or other demonstrated financial need* o cost-of-living for location of their program placement o whether or not housing is provided by a program o total availability of supplementary funds o demonstrated need among all applicants * Selection for program participation is need-blind and independently determined from financial need.
