Hawk Talk Principal’s Pen Does anyone really like change? I know I don’t. I like to know what to expect, and I thrive on routines. My guess is that many of us are like that--creatures of habit. However, sometimes change is exciting, even inspiring. As we launch into spring, here are some MHMS changes that you may not know about. Thanks to PTO, we will soon have an awning that will cover the front entrance and sidewalk. This will allow students to load and unload out of the weather. This was an expensive endeavor, but a change that everyone will soon enjoy. As many of us remember from last year with our facilities campaign, our goal was to make significant changes to the campus. Once the weather dries out for a stretch of time, we will begin to see the last loads of dirt brought to the front field, graded, and seeded to make another recreational area for our students. That change should happen by summer. Once that is completed, we can begin fencing the campus, too. Thanks to Deputy Smith and our persistence, we have a change to school security. 51 cameras have been installed in the building and around campus. These cameras will help us maintain the security of teachers and students and keep our campus safe. There are also some curriculum changes on the horizon which will allow our students to continue to soar ahead. These will be shared in detail with the specific grade levels in the coming weeks. These changes continue to support the accomplishments of students. For example, MHMS had an all-time high number of 7th grade students who took the ACT through the Duke TIP program and earned state or grand recognition. Those students will be recognized on awards day in May. The MHMS teachers, staff, and I hope that we also change lives with the work we do. Nothing is more satisfying than seeing a young boy or girl change over time into an independent, confident, and successful man or woman. Thank you for trusting us with your child. “Be the change you want to see in the world.” --Gandhi Proud to serve, Darren Frank, Principal
