Hawk Talk Principal’s Pen
March certainly came in like a lion! Since we started the month with a delayed opening, I’d like to share how we keep your child safe. MHMS has a thorough and reliable means of insuring student safety in cases of weather or other emergencies. We have rehearsed evacuation and fire drills, and can safely evacuate our building and account for every student in less than 3 minutes. We rehearsed “alert status” and “lock down” drills earlier this year. We have a plan in place should we have to dismiss school from an alternate location due to the campus being unsafe. After each rehearsal, I ask teachers and students to let me know if they have any questions, concerns, or observations that would help us improve our practices. Spring ushers in the element of severe weather, such as tornadoes. Fortunately, we are able to have advanced warning and can calmly move students to a sturdy, safe section of the building. In fact, many areas in the middle and high school part of the school are actually built into a hillside, making those areas the best in such situations. In the event that we would have to move students into a different location because of severe weather, I respectfully ask that you not rush to come pick students up from school. Our concrete and steel structure is safer than being on the roads. I would rather invite you in to stay with your student until the weather passes. My teachers and I will remain on campus as long as necessary to safely dismiss students as the weather allows. School safety is paramount to academic success, and I appreciate everyone’s help and diligence maintaining that expectation. I welcome any feedback from you and your student to make MHMS not only the best school in the state, but also the safest. Proud to serve, Darren Frank, Principal

Instrumental Music Our MHMS middle and high school students helped to provide an outstanding two day event last month - the All Sumner County Bands. We had a total of eleven students who participated in this Honors group by auditions held last month. Out of our small program, a greater percentage of students proved themselves more capable than ever before! Mr. Clark is looking for students to join his MHMS Strings Ensemble next year! If you have or know of a student in grades 6-12, and they are interested in violin, viola or cello, please have them contact Mr. Clark at school.
