President’s Corner Greetings from your Missouri Master Gardener Association, Inc. President Elaine Fix – 2014 President As we head into the New Year, I’d like to thank Steve Stacey for representing MOMGA as we launched the association. Getting people together from all over the state is no easy task but when you are concerned about the Master Gardener program, people are ready to serve. As we look to our history for perspective, the Master Gardener program started in 1983 in Missouri. So, happy 30th birthday to all of us and here’s to continued success in our communities as we move forward in 2014 and beyond. We have accomplished quite a lot in the first two years as an association. 1) We created a website where everyone can see who other chapters are in their region, who the president is, if they are on Facebook and if they have a website. There are 58 chapters in Missouri and 31 have joined us in the first year! 2) We are working with the MU Leadership Team to discuss issues that concern your chapters and your members. 3) We are working to provide our member master gardener chapters with important information they will need as we move forward. Those goals are to have our by-laws amended to show affiliate master gardener chapters under our 501©3 tax free status; a state wide plant license for our chapter member’s plant sales, provide a clear understanding of liability coverage provided through the university and working on an annual state conference for all members. We will be in St Louis for 2014 and have many exciting events planned. At the November meeting we put in place a Membership Chairman, Karen Kunz from Kansas City and 7 sub-committees to assist with the 2014 MOMGA membership drive.

The Master Gardeners of Greene County Hosted The Missouri Master Gardener Association, Inc. Annual Conference September 20-22, 2013 in Springfield.

We were promised a garden party and we were not disappointed. Master Gardeners from all corners of Missouri converged in Springfield for a weekend of Plants, Plants and More Plants! We were treated to fun and interesting tours of the plant related sites around Springfield including the local Botanical Garden. Along with the fun, we had the opportunity to hear several speakers and attend classes and workshops all designed to enhance our knowledge of plants whether it be flowers or vegetables. There was something available to suit all us gardeners. Fellow Master Gardener, Lynn Moll from Franklin County Master Gardeners in EC Region provided a fun and interesting overview of the conference weekend, click here to view more photos and information on the conference

Thank You to The Greene County Master Gardeners for a wonderful conference. We look forward to visiting them again soon.

2014 Missouri Master Gardener Conference Not since 2003 have you had the chance to see the world of gardening that St. Louis has to offer. In that year the St. Louis Master Gardeners hosted the statewide master gardener conference and we are about to do it again next September. During the weekend of September 12-14, 2014 master gardeners from all across the state will gather for a full conference of tours, lectures, receptions and more fun than you can shake a shovel at. We have been joined in presenting this conference by Jefferson, Franklin and St. Charles counties as partners in the planning and production process. The theme of partners is evident in our logo which represents the pollinator partners we all depend upon. The planning of the conference has been sprouting since this spring with a committee of 15 folks dedicated to showing the best the St. Louis gardening committee has to offer. Please stay tuned as we cultivate our plan and begin unveiling our ideas. A website should soon appear that will give you an idea of what to expect. Before you know it we will open registration, probably this spring and we'll be off and running. The St. Louis Master Gardeners hope to see you next September when all of our efforts will bear fruit. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

MOMGA, Inc. to obtain umbrella plant license for MG plant sales By Blanche Kelly – 2014 MOMGA Treasurer MOMGA, Inc. will be purchasing a Missouri Department of Agriculture Nursery License that will be available for member chapters to use this spring during the 2014 annual plant sale season. Member chapters will still be subject to inspection and chapters will have to contact MOMGA, Inc. to provide dates, contact information, etc. before local chapters will be considered “licensed.” More details will follow as the Association works with the Dept. of Agriculture to finalize the necessary steps. Remember, you must be a 2014 dues paying CHAPTER, not individual, to be able to use the license. If you have not currently renewed your nursery license for next spring’s plant sales, consider waiting until your chapter has paid your 2014 MOMGA, Inc. dues as this is one of the benefits of joining MOMGA, Inc. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Endowment Fund Established for Missouri Master Gardeners An endowment fund has been created to provide funding for our Missouri Master Gardener program. It was named in honor of two model Master Gardeners who had a passion for education and an art for inspiration -- Ray Rothenberger and Jim Wilson. Ray was a professor and horticulture specialist at MU for 30 years. His leadership was a key factor in facilitating the first Master Gardener Program in Missouri in 1983. Jim was a Master Gardener in South Carolina, and an Honorary MG in eight more states -- Missouri was the first to bestow him with this honor. He cohosted PBS’s “Victory Garden.” The endowment will provide our state organization an opportunity to support future growth of our MG Program in Missouri by providing a permanent source of money to support programs in the near future and beyond. This growth will be vital to the ongoing success of the Missouri Master Gardener Program. We encourage you and your local Master Gardener Chapters to join fellow Master Gardeners around the state in contributing to this important fund. Contributions are now being accepted and would be appreciated as you consider your end of year charitable contributions. The University of Mo has provided two employees within the Development Office to handle the Endowment. If you have questions regarding the Endowment, please contact Brent McCauley, Development Officer at 573-884-8732 or [email protected]. As plans for growing the endowment progress additional information will be shared with all chapters. Additional background information on the endowment is also available at MOMGA Website - Rothenberger/Wilson Endowment

Holiday Wreath Auction at the Missouri Botanical Garden

This is just four of the fifteen beautifully designed wreaths on display at the Missouri Botanical Garden in the Ridgeway Center throughout the holiday season. The wreaths are available for purchase during the silent auction currently underway and continuing until January 2. The wreath display is always a highlight of trips to the garden during the holidays. 1. Not a Creature was Stirring – designed by Marlene Norton from Schnucks Florist and Gifts. 2. Herbal Harmony – designed by Michael Stevens and Barbara O’Brien for the St. Louis Herb Society. 3. The Life of a Tumbleweed – designed by Resito Pescon for twiggs and MOSS. 4. The Woodland Wreath – designed by Wendy Conroy for Sugar Creek Gardens Many of the wreaths are quite large and not suitable for many of our homes, but we enjoy getting new ideas for making our own version of these beautiful designs. The Tumbleweed has received lots of attention especially from our Texas visitors who recognize the tumbleweeds immediately. The Woodland Wreath was created by the designer using bark, twigs and other natural items found in her back yard.

Note from the Editor - Chyrle Arens - St Louis Master Gardeners Our next issue is scheduled for publication in March 2014. We will be looking for articles from some of the chapters to share. I’m sure lots of planning and shopping from seed books will be going on in the next couple of months. Please consider sharing some of your plans with your MG friends around the state. If you are planning a spring plant sale, let us know so we can publish it in the March issue. You know MGs, they will travel miles in search of new varieties and nicely priced plants. It’s what we do for fun! I encourage each chapter to share information about their events, photos and news stories. Articles from nonmember chapters will be included only if space allows. I look forward to hearing from everyone and would very much appreciate your feedback regarding ideas for the newsletter and feedback on this issue. The plan is to publish the e-newsletter four times during the year with the deadline for submitting articles or announcements listed below. If you need assistance with submitting photos or articles, no problem, you can reach me by email at [email protected] or by phone at 636-296-3326. _____________________________________________________________________________ 2014 Publication Schedule: March 1, 2014, June 1, 2014, September 1, 2014, December 1, 2014 Deadline: On the 15th of the month preceding the publication date ______________________________________________________________________
