Dealing with Exam Stress
Rounders
Miss Stone has put together a guide to dealing with exam stress: Recognise when you are feeling overwhelmed. Take a break…make a drink, have a snack or just a chat with someone. Avoid comparing yourself with others, everyone revises in different ways. Don’t feel pressured into doing things differently. Eat well; fresh fruit and veg are best and stay hydrated. Chocolate and coffee won’t help! Sleep well - make sure you are getting enough sleep, wind down before going to bed and avoid revising after 9pm. Exercise is a great way to destress, giving you energy and motivation
.
If you feel yourself panicking too much in the exam, take a few minutes
to slow down your breathing. Don’t spend time worrying about the exams you have done. You have done your best but you can’t change it now! It will all be over soon! Advice can be found on the following websites: http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/stress-anxiety-depression/Pages/Coping-with -exam-stress.aspx https://www.childline.org.uk/info-advice/school-college-and-work/schoolcollege/exam-stress/ http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/educationadvice/11604644/Dont-let -exam-stress-consume-your-family.html

On a very dreary lunch time this week, staff and Year 11 students fought the elements to partake in a very competitive Rounders match to raise money for the Year 11 Prom. Some players were ill equipped in stylish rather than practical shoes whilst others wore thick winter coats that restricted their arm movements. After lots of challenging behaviour and frequent bending of the rules from both teams, the win went to the staff, 10-6. Rounders matches start after half term with Year 9s and Years 10s taking part in a tournament at home on Wednesday 7th June. Years 7 and 8 will begin playing on Wednesday 14th June. Please see Miss Lawrence for a permission slip if you are interested in joining in.
City Sports The annual City Sports Athletics competition takes place on Monday 22nd May at the UEA. Our students have been participating in Athletics in PE lessons and teachers have been busy collating all the results. Despite the poor weather, students have done really well and there have been some fantastic individual performances. The teams for Years 7-10 will be announced soon. Students are urged to get their reply slips back to Mr Goodwin as soon as possible.
Mrs Main Declares her Love for Mr Bruff! Those of you in 11EN2 and 11EnglishEM form will already know all about my true love for a certain gentleman who goes by the name of Mr Bruff. He isn’t the most handsome, and his voice is rather monotone, but what he doesn’t know about the English exams isn’t worth knowing. You can find Mr Bruff on YouTube, and his revision videos are perfect for listening to while you’re eating your dinner, doing your hair or even soaking in the bath! He’ll talk you through which poems are good to
compare, why Romeo can’t stop falling in love and how to answer that tricky structure question in English Language Paper 1. I hope I have persuaded you to give the Mr Bruff videos a try but if not, watch his Power and Conflict rap. It might help you to learn your poetry quotes, and if not, you’ll hear a grown man make a bit of a fool of himself. Good luck on Monday Year 11! Mrs Main.
New KS3 Curriculum Parents of Year 7 and Year 8 students received a letter last week informing them of the new Key Stage 3 curriculum due to start after half term. In the English department we are all very excited about delivering a whole range of amazing new texts which we are sure students will love. These have been shared with the rest of the school to provide opportunities to link students' learning with other curriculum subjects. Each week students will be following a core literary curriculum for the majority
Year 10 Year 10 will soon be receiving a selection of revision guides provided by the school for some of their GCSE subjects. Please can parents ensure these are well used to support their learning in class.
of their lessons, complete a bespoke grammar programme to improve on their literacy skills and be led in a guided reading lesson. In addition to this all students in Years 7-9 will take part in the Hewett Great Reads challenge with a brand new selection of books being launched in September. We will be sharing all text lists with you here and on our website so you can get involved in the challenge and discuss the texts with your child.
