Globalization in Philadelphia By Kimberly Bush
After doing this project, I realized the ups and downs of Globalization.
You can’t obtain something without sacrificing another thing in return. I truly understand what this means now, seeing as though most of the things Americans have is thanks to globalization. Without it, we would not be as advanced as we are in technology, fashion, education, and other things that we Americans find important. Yet without it, people overseas wouldn’t be gypped for what they deserve. Getting paid cents to make the clothes that we pay hundreds for, to produce the technology that we pay thousands for. It’s not fair yet, that’s the way things are in the world. The U.S. is sort of starting to realize this now and is trying to stop the sweat shops overseas by making their own appliances, clothes, etc. We haven’t come far yet to rule out getting imports from China, but it’s coming along.

From airports to train stations, it is clear that security measures have become more intense throughout the following years, especially since the terrorist attack of Melwert, Jim. Migration and Colonization

These pictures are all clear examples of Globalization in Philadelphia, if not the most noticeable example. Chinatown,
known for it’s exotic markets and iconic scenery, is also well known for it’s diversity. The Friendship Arch is an iconic symbol for the exchange of culture and friendship with Philadelphia and Tainjin, China. As you can see, the Chinese community has their own piece of Philadelphia. From street signs to store fronts to banks, you can see both Chinese and English language.
The Chinese first arrived in Philadelphia during the late 1840s, hearing stories of gold and the promise of high wages. The
main goal for the fist immigrants from China was to hit it rich and return home to their families. However, most of them were rudely awakened by their poverty stricken lives because of the anti-Chinese feelings that Americans were giving them. When World War II came around, it gave the Chinese job opportunities and put them in better standings with the U.S.
Technology in the U.S. becomes newer and more advanced everyday. We have products that in a month or two will be more advance then we ever dreamed of and two months later, there will be another product that surpasses that one. One of the companies that have such a big part in this type of fast

paced technology is Apple. You can’t walk down one street without seeing someone using an Apple device.

The Apple logo is recognized world wide and has influenced a great part of the way we look at technology in today’s world. Through this company, we are able to connect with people from across the world, helping America become more globally connected to the world and helping us become a more global community. Also, this company has made way for a new cultural shift, making “business the leading force shaping technology.”

Nowadays, about every car and truck has parts that
are made in different countries and some are even built in different countries. Researchers believe that there is no such thing as a completely American car or truck built only with American parts. Many “American” cars such as Chrysler’s, Dodge’s, and Ford’s products are built in Canada and Mexico.
Because of globalization, car companies are gaining
a competitive advantage. It widens the horizons of new “If you want the world at your doorstep, buy a new car.”

The basic foundations on which cars are built can now be shared all over the world with cars whose manufacturing companies are similar thanks to globalization. This brings grater flexibility to the auto industry, bringing more varieties and different types of vehicles while making developing and building time less.
The MacBooks in SLA are an essential part of a student’s day in school. Not only does it broaden the horizons of what a school community can do, but it gives the students more insight about what’s happening in the world today and gives them access to any type of information at the click of a button. It also not helps them communicate more efficiently with other students and their teachers as well. Globalization has played a great part in these student’s lives because without it, they would not be able to access

such privileges. Yes, these Apple MacBooks are “designed” in California, however, the laptop itself is mass produced in China for a very low price. Globalization is the reason why Apple is so successful in the world today.
So, many might think, What in the world? Migration in migration? This picture was taken in Chinatown. It’s like a world within a world.I don’t think I understood the “melting pot” of Philadelphia until I saw this newspaper stand. Therefore, I would categorize this as Migration in Migration or even Culture in Migration.

This picture is of a battery of an LG enV cell phone. Already, we can see that it was made in Japan, yet manufactured in Korea. (Notice how it’s sort of the same when it comes to the Apple Company) However, the thing that interests me is the language that it is in. As you can see, it breaks from English to Spanish when talking about the precautions. This is an example of globalization because it is believed that Spanish will become America’s second language. In 2001, about 10

million Spanish speakers entered the country.
Many are concerned that America will split because of these language differences, much like Canada. People are already noticing, “pockets of people who speak other languages and no English...” However, some believe that this argument is absurd, seeing as though Benjamin Franklin believed the same things about the German Americans. Those concerns were put to rest. Immigrant colonization is common throughout history, from the German and Polish throughout the Midwest to the Italians in New York. All in all, it’s here to stay, however, we have yet to know the effect that it’s going to have on us.
Trade and Technology LG. LG Electronics, 2011. Web. 1 June 2011. .
This picture contains all LG products; a cell phone charger, a cell phone, and a cell phone battery. However, the charger was made in China, as was the cell phone itself. Yet, the battery of the cell phone was made in Japan and manufactured in Korea. Seeing as though LG is a South Korean company, I believe that this would represent globalization well. LG describes itself as “a global leader and technology innovator in consumer electronics, mobile communications and home appliances, employing more than 80,000 people working in over 115 operations around the world.” Even on the LG site, you are able to change the language by picking your region and then your language.
“LG's innovative technologies, unique products, and cutting-edge designs are an investment in the future.”

As you have seen probably on most of the clothes you’ve bought, it says it’s either made in China or in some other place other than the U.S. I asked my mother to randomly pull out two shirts from out of her closet and she came back with these, one made in China (shockingly) and one made in Vietnam. The thing we fail to realize is that thousands of people from overseas are making these products, the ones that we’d pay an arm and a leg, for cents a day. According to U.S. Government data, “75% to 85% of fashion and fashion accessories are manufactured in China.” According to the information given, China is still our main importer for Textile and Apparel Trade in the U.S. Vietnam is getting up there with China, its exports increasing since the recent recession that we just underwent. However, throughout the years, Vietnam is the main one undergoing increases in their exports. Without globalization, we wouldn’t have as many fashions nor would we really have any clothes that make us feel “good” about ourselves. However, because of globalization we are paying out of pocket for something that was made for less than its selling price.
