2016 School Profile for Post-Secondary Institutions: Welcome to Harmony Magnet Academy, where every graduate will be college and career ready. Principal’s Message Harmony Magnet Academy (HMA) is a Charter School and part of the Porterville Unified School District (PUSD) located in Strathmore, California. Completed in August of 2008, it was the only site in the state of California to receive a small high school construction grant. Admission to HMA does not depend on academic performance. There is no screening of applicants. Students at Harmony benefit from a well-rounded experience, which includes a strong activities program. Whether it is clubs, ASB, or sports at Strathmore High School, we are confident students will find many opportunities to connect at HMA. The faculty and staff at Harmony Magnet Academy are dedicated educators committed to student success. HMA posted a region high STAR (API report) of 882 in 2012 and 875 in 2013. Another indicator of our success is that 517 of 527 students of our first five graduating classes have indicated they will pursue post-secondary educational opportunities. Graduating students at HMA have also benefitted from scholarships and grants exceeding 5.1 million dollars over the last four years. Mission Statement Harmony Magnet Academy offers students a college preparatory curriculum with a program of study in either the Academy of Engineering or the Academy of Performing Arts. We provide a safe and supportive environment, actively involved community-based advisory boards, and an academically rigorous core curriculum with study specific integrated projects. Recognizing the unique and varied needs of each student, our mission is to help all students achieve their highest potential. School Profile Porterville, lying along the foothills of the Sierras, is located on State Highway 65, 165 miles north of Los Angeles, and 171 miles east of the Pacific Coast. We are located in Strathmore, adjacent to Strathmore High School on SHS’s southern boundary. We are in a rural agricultural community with a high Hispanic, low-income population in the San Joaquin Valley. Our campus, now seven years old, sits on 20 acres and features a two story classroom structure, a 900 seat performing/ athletic venue, administrative/counseling offices, specially designed laboratory classrooms, technology labs and athletic fields. In order to meet the college and career paths established for Harmony students, we have added an additional instructional period to the day and have increased the graduation requirement to 260 credits. Additional core courses are required for graduation, providing an opportunity for our students to be fully a-g qualified for enrollment at a University of California or California State University campus. HMA's class schedule is a modified block the same as Strathmore High School’s schedule, making additional class offerings available to our students. “Blocked” scheduling allows for longer periods of time for investigative lab studies, which supports research improving academic performance. This unique schedule allows students to more effectively achieve at a high level in both academic and co-curricular activities. The unique design of the small learning community allows students to study in an academically-rigorous, safe and supportive learning environment. The Academy of Performing Arts houses specialty arts courses such as guitar, keyboarding, dance elements and interpretation, video and audio production, stagecraft and graphic arts. Additionally, Harmony Magnet Academy is proud to house the PUSD orchestra. The Academy of Engineering is supported by NAF, Project Lead the Way, ConnectEd, and The National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering. The curriculum is stringent and designed to produce college and work ready graduates in the ever-expanding fields within engineering. Course work includes engineering design, principles of engineering, digital electronics, biotechnical engineering, civil engineering and architecture, computer integrated manufacturing and engineering design and development. Centrally located to major markets, the city has strategic access to major transportation routes. Porterville Unified School District serves more than 13,000 students throughout the community, as well as the town of Strathmore. The district is comprised of ten elementary schools, three middle schools, four comprehensive high schools, one magnet academy, one continuation high school, and two alternative sites.
