flowers that seem to stretch forever. Past Issues Be safe in the neighborhood with all the children around from before 8am to after 5pm with Boys and Girls Club at Hillcrest School.

MARK YOUR CALENDERS! Sunday, October 22, will see neighbors gathering for the HNA Fall Potluck.

This time, however, we'll host The 1st Annual Crockpot Cookoff. Be thinking about your favorite slow-cooker recipe (soup, stew, chili); we'll provide the electricity. We've submitted an application (not yet approved) to use Hillcrest School's cafeteria for the event, and if weather allows, we'll move to the renowned Ryan Gray Playground for outside games. We'll give the neighbors a sneak peek at kids' Halloween costumes with a parade around a block or two. Don't miss this fun event! Details will follow between now and then. If interested in helping or providing a crockpot dish please contact us!

NEIGHBORHOOD CALENDAR Wed. SEP 20 @ 5:15pm: Casey's General Store Information Meeting @ Lawrence Public Library Meeting Room C Fri. OCT 06 @ 5pm: Hillcrest School Carnival Sun. NEIGHBORHOOD SIGNATURE Our beloved “Welcome” boulder, aka “The Big Rock” at 9th and Highland is due for fall cleanup / winter prep. We need volunteers to help with this project, which, judging from past experience, will take about an hour on Saturday, November 4, at 11:00 a.m. You may have noticed that the boulder has started to lean backward. We're working on a solution to this and anticipate straight-up signage soon.

WELCOME HOME

Past Issues It's a testament to the Hillcrest Neighborhood's friendly and accommodating nature when people move back into the neighborhood after many years of living elsewhere. A warm welcome to John and Martha Baker, who recently rehabbed and moved into a home on Hilltop after 9 years in Kansas City. For those around at that time John was the neighborhood mailman for many years. Also welcome back Kim King, daughter of Mary Ann and Newton King, who bought a rental property on Oxford after 30 years out of the neighborhood. We're so glad you're back!

WANTED 3 Section Leaders (Little Secret: It helps achieve your step count!) Interested? [email protected]

A NEIGHBORHOOD CASEY'S? You may have seen or heard about a proposal to build a Casey's at 6th and Wisconsin (presently the site of the College Motel). This location would be on the perimeter of the Hillcrest Neighborhood. Neighbors have various concerns, many about traffic. Emily Hill, in the Hillcrest Neighborhood, has met with Sandra Day of the City Planning Office, who has been in contact with a Casey's representative. Casey's has promised to hold at least one neighborhood meeting to discuss issues which will be September 20, 2017 at 5:15 - 6:15 pm at the Lawrence Public Library (707 Vermont Street) Meeting Room C. If you cannot attend but have concerns you can email us and we will be present to be the voice of our neighbors.

HOORAY FOR HNA! After almost two years' vacancy, the Communications Secretary position on the HNA Board has been filled! New neighbor Greg Huebner has volunteered to take on the responsibilities as described in our bylaws, and with the able assistance of his wife, Cathy Huebner, will be producing and sending out the neighborhood newsletter on a regular basis. We are SOOOO grateful to Greg and Cathy for their willingness to actively participate in the neighborhood association. As a matter of fact, this newsletter is their pilot/premiere edition. Come meet them and their three daughters at the Fall Potluck.
