Spanish III class interviews the Argentinian writer Aniko Villalba

Aniko Villalba was born in Argentina. She defines herself as a digital nomad, that is, a person who works from anywhere in the world through the Internet. Aniko started to travel nine years ago, when she finished college, and has since lived on the road, moving from place to place. She has been in all continents. Travelling is also what set off her career as a writer and writing has provided her the means to keep travelling. Today, she

has 4 books published and she runs the blog Viajando por ahí (Travelling around, at http://viajandoporahi.com/blog-de-viajes). The Spanish III class interviewed Aniko Villalba as part of the project “Mochileros”, in which the students researched and wrote about travelling in South America. Aniko was pleased to attend our students’ request. The questions were created by the students, who also helped in the translation to English and the review of the final version of the text. Spanish III class is Alexa Denzler, Brianna Donaghy, Morgan Flynn, Jeffrey Iosif, Sarah Liszewski, Joanna Mytraj, Nhi Nguyen, Deric Rosado, Corinne Vecchione and Kayla Yeager. English 1. Where are you going on your next trip? To Biarritz, a French city, very close to Spain. It’s a special place to me, because it’s where I met my husband. 2. What was the most beautiful place you have ever visited? And the most interesting? And the most beloved? Which place was the most expensive? And the cheapest? It’s very hard to choose. I think the most beautiful was Laponia, in Sweden. One of the most interesting ones was Morocco, for its colors and its mix of cultures and languages. The most beloved one is Peru, since I have very good friends there, and Spain, where I feel at home. The most expensive was Japan and the cheapest one was Camboya. 3. What is most difficult thing about life on the road? Being away from my family and friends. Meeting people and then having to say goodbye. Not being able to have a pet. Having to leave all my books at home. 4. If you didn’t travel, what career would you have followed? And where do you believe you would have stayed? I’d probably have worked as a writer or graphic designer. I think I’d have stayed in Buenos Aires, my home town. 5. What is the significance of your tattoo? It’s the symbol of Leo, my zodiac sign. I had it done ten years ago, in honor of one of my best friends, who is an astrologist. 6. Where else would you like to travel? I’d love to go to Turkey or the Easter Island, but actually, any place is fine for me. 7. If you're not a photographer or a writer, how can you become a digital nomad? By doing any work online: graphic design, programming, illustration, editing and others. A digital nomad can work anywhere in the world from his/her computer. 8. Are there moments when you want to quit? Yes, sometimes I get tired and feel like doing something else. But a few days later the motivation comes back. :)

9. Do you spend time with your family? And if so, how do you find the time? Yes, everytime I go back to Buenos Aires I try to spend the most possible time with them, it’s one of my priorities. 10. Why did you travel all over South America, but not to Paraguay? I don’t know! I think I chose another route. I haven’t been to Venezuela either. 11. How do you communicate with people that speak other languages? Especially with your husband, who is French. I usually communicate in English anywhere in the world. My husband and I mix three different languages: English, Spanish and French. We started with English, since that was our only language in common, and then one started to learn the language of the other. 12. Have you ever been someplace that was out of your comfort zone regarding culture or religion? I believe the most uncomfortable experience was to wear heavy clothes in Muslim countries because it was really hot. 13. Do you think that it is safe for everyone to travel the world? (Not long ago I saw a video that said certain countries aren’t safe for African Americans. Other people think that it is not safe for a woman to travel alone.) In my experience, travelling is safe for anybody. You only have to be careful to avoid zones of political conflict or war and always use your common sense and intuition. 14. What has changed now that you travel with someone else? Now I have someone to share the moments I live and the landscapes I see. On the other hand, I no longer take decisions by myself. 15. Do you have the desire to have kids? If you had them, do you think that you’d stay on the road? Yes, I do have that desire, but for that to happen I’d like to settle in France or Argentina, at least for a couple of months. Spanish 1.

No poder tener mascotas. 4. Si no viajaras, ¿qué carrera habrías seguido? Tampoco pude ir a Venezuela aún. 11.
