Be Extraordinary!

Harbor&Springs&Public&Schools& March 13, 2017 Dear Parents and Community Members: We are pleased to provide you with the Annual Education Report (AER) that provides key information on the 2015-2016 educational progress for Harbor Springs Middle School. The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws, including information about student assessment, accountability, and teacher quality. If you have any questions about the AER, please contact principal Wil Cwikiel for more information. The AER is available for you to review electronically by visiting the Middle School page of the Harbor Springs Public Schools website (http://www.harborps.org/schools/middle-school/middleschool). Alternatively, you may review a copy of the AER in the main office of the Middle School. As you can see from the data in the combined report, there are strengths and key challenges in each of the core content areas. In the area of math, our 6th, 7th , and 8th graders all out-performed their grade level peers across the state, and our 7th and 8th graders out-performed their ISD peers as well. Although 7th grade test scores significantly improved from when these students took the MEAP in Fall of 2013 as compared to peers, there is a concern that over 50% of 7th Graders scored not proficient. One point of pride is that Harbor Springs Middle School’s math test scores increase as students progress through Middle School when compared to ISD and state peers. The area of English Language Arts continues to be a strength in the district, with all grade levels in the Middle School outpacing their peers in the ISD and state level. Furthermore, the 6th graders widened the gap between ISD and state peers when compared to their performance on the MEAP taken the previous year. The fact that very few students in all grade levels scored in the “Not Proficient” category indicates a very good baseline level of ability in this content area. In the area of Science, students showed much growth between when they took the standardized MEAP Science test in 5th grade and when they took it again in 7th grade. As well, the Harbor Springs Middle School students out-performed their peers at the ISD and state level. However, Proficiency levels in district, ISD, and state leave much room for growth in Science, and there is great concern that only about 30% of 7th graders scored proficient on the M-STEP exam. In the area of Social Studies, 8th Graders showed growth when compared to their peers between the 5th grade content test and the M-STEP and the Harbor Springs Middle School students outperformed their peers at the ISD and state level. The fact that a very small number of students (5.4%) scored not proficient indicates good baseline level of ability across the grade level in this content area and represents a great opportunity for those students who scored partially proficient to move into the proficient category. Harbor Springs Public Schools is small district with no specialized schools, as such there is no process for assigning pupils to the Middle School. We are an out-of-formula district that accepts schools of choice on a lottery basis in grade levels where appropriate. Since this is the only Middle School in the district, all district students in grades 6, 7, and 8 attend this school. The district core curriculum is aligned with the state core curriculum standards. The teaching staff utilize this curriculum framework for all instructional and assessment decisions. The curriculum scope and sequence can be found at www.harborps.org. The district is currently in the process of transferring the curriculum to Atlas Curriculum Mapping (ACM), which will make it more accessible to parents in the future. Parents are an important part of student success at Harbor Springs Middle School. In addition to their support at home, parents are engaged with student learning through PowerSchool and Edmodo, and attend parent teacher conferences. The number of students represented by parents, and the percent of students represented at each grade level is noted it the table below. Harbor Springs Middle School is a great place to learn. We are fortunate to be in a community that is very supportive and willing to partner with the school to improve the quality of education for our students. Partnerships with organizations and local businesses help ensure enrichment opportunities such as Native American cultural presentations, local history tours, recreational activities, and the annual 8th grade trip to Chicago. The faculty and staff of Harbor Springs Middle School will continue to strive to ensure a quality middle level education for the students in the greater Harbor Springs community. We look forward to another excellent year! Sincerely,

Wilfred Cwikiel Wilfred Cwikiel Principal
