Great Oak High School I.B. School Profile – 2016-2017 GOHS offers the full I.B. diploma programme, along with course offerings. It is a highly rigorous program and challenges students to think critically at an extremely high level in order to prepare them for the rigors of college coursework. The full program includes: Extended Essay: A 4,000-word student directed research paper in a subject and on a topic of their choice. Students work with a faculty mentor as they proceed through the research process. Theory of Knowledge: A class in Epistemology where students are taught to think critically about the ways in which we access knowledge. A primary function of the course is to challenge current beliefs and teach students to be aware of biases, preconceptions and assumptions that hinder critical thought. CAS: A component which requires students complete activities using Creativity, Action and Service. As a part of CAS, students must complete an individual project, develop new skills, and engage in something with global and ethical implications. Great Oak’s I.B. programme is one of the largest world-wide, with almost 500 students involved at the course and diploma level over the 11-12th grades. This year we have 118 full diploma candidates. Our students realize that although this may bring down their g.p.a. in some subjects, the education they receive is superior. As a result of the commitment of our teachers and students, our data continues to improve. Below is some data regarding our program:

The worldwide average for the IB diploma last year was 76%. 2008 was our first full IB graduating class.

IB exams are on a scale of 1-7. A score of 4 is considered passing by the IB. Our average diploma score (overall) is a solid 30, which gains 30 credits at all UC schools. Outstanding Items of Note about GOHS-I.B.: • • • • • • • • • •
